Product Description

Product Description

In the tiny aristocratic figure of Parbati Barua, known as "queen of the elephants", Mark Shand finds his ultimate guru. He had already learned about the ways of elephants after riding his beloved Tara across India, a journey which he described in "Travels on My Elephant", for which he won the 1992 Travel Writer of the Year Award. But he is no match for the daughter of India's greatest expert on the Asian elephant, the late Prince of Gauripur, who taught her everything. She lassoed her first wild elephant before she was 20. Once he has earned her trust, Shand rides with Parbati the elephants' ancient migratory route through the tea gardens of West Bengal and along the rarely visited Himalayan corridor to her ancestral home in Assam. They were accompanied by Aditya Patankar, whose photographs in this book accompany Shand's account of his quest for a solution to the problem of conserving the Asian elephant.

4.0 out of 5 stars An entertaining, well written book, 15 May 2001
By A Customer
Mark Shand has a relaxed, humorous and entertaining style. The book is a pleasure to read. Assam is faithfully depicted, as is the dire plight of the indian elephant. But above all the personality of Parbati, the "Queen of the Elephants" comes across - a woman of serenity, character and resilience, for whom the reader can only have respect.

2.0 out of 5 stars Posh Brit on elephant in India, 30 May 2008
By Humpty Dumpty (Wall St, Upton Snodsbury) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Queen of the Elephants (Hardcover)
I found the passages about the dealing with the elephant very good. But the basic situation grates - Camilla Parker Bowles' brother travels across India on an elephant accompanied by local staff and handy jeep just in case. All rather condescending as patrician young Englishman plays-at-being-native.

The tone is set at the start when Shand just happens to know the old boy network (Anglo-Indians, zoo directors, journalists and politicians) who smooth his path all the way along, lending vehicles and doling out visiting cards that bring the local police to heel when handed out.

Give it a miss, on the whole

5.0 out of 5 stars A fitting sequel to "Travels....", 7 Jul 2009
By PD Miller "Scribbler 81" (France) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
What a lucky man is Mark Shand, being able to go off on such adventures, and with such exotic people! Parbhati, the Queen of the Elephants, is a very fierce lady, who does actually sound quite terrifying. Daughter of a mahout, she was brought up alongside these enormous creatures, and as an adult she is as close to mastery of them as it is possible to be. We follow Shand's progress as he endeavours to acquire some of her talents.

A follow-up to "Travels on my Elephant", this saga is just as intriguing, just as well-written, just as immensely enjoyable.
