5.0 out of 5 stars Que me queires, Amor? 16 April 2009
Format:Paperback
This is a collection of beautifully told stories, full of pathos and humour in equal measure. This Galician author deserves to be much better known. The Spanish translation is excellent and not difficult for English readers of reasonable proficiency. Manuel Rivas gets right inside the minds of his characters, be they children or adults. This is a must-buy.

These tales would best suit either a native speaker of Spanish, or an advanced learner. Obviously as this is a Kindle book, you can use the free Real Academía Española dictionary to help you if you need any definitions. In literary terms, this is a great feast which will keep you entertained and satisfied for many hours. Three stories in this book, Carmiña, Un saxo en la niebla and La lengua de las mariposas together formed the beautiful and famous film, La Lengua de las Mariposas, aka Butterfly's Tongue. These three stories, set in the times of the Spanish Civil War, are both haunting and insightful, and are among the most beautiful stories which I have ever read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely stories 6 Feb 2011
By COB
Format:Paperback
I'm studying A-Level Spanish, and having seen the film La Lengua de las Mariposas (the Butterfly's Tongue), I really wanted to read the original stories. There are a collection of about a dozen (from memory), usually about some aspect of childhood. I found the stories great: they don't take too long to read and the vocabulary is an excellent level (easy enough so I could read most of it, but more challenging at parts).

I'd really recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly Good 18 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A lovely little collection of short stories which inspired the film La Lengua de Mariposas (The Butterflies' Tongue).
Set mostly in Galicia in northwest Spain, there is a childish freshness in the stories which are kept quite brief. If like me you are not a native Spanish speaker you may struggle with a few of the words as these are obviously common to the local region. Otherwise the language is down-to-earth but captures the era (1930s) splendidly with the Spanish Civil War looming on the horizon - could not recommend it enough.
