AN ESSENTIAL PURCHASE FOR ZAPPA COLLECTORS,

There have long been rumours of Quadrophonic mixes that Frank did back in the Seventies sitting in the archives. Well now, thanks to DTS, some of these gems have been excavated and are available on this essential disc. The sound is amazing throughout and the set features not only mixes of previously released material ('Wild Love', 'Ship Ahoy') but also unreleased gems such as 'Rollo', with Frank letting rip a typically stunning guitar solo. If you're a collector of Frank's music you've just got to get this DVD Audio disc - it's awesome!

For those like me, who's stereo was not 4 way!,

Ok, I don't have a surround set up, I basically chose the stereo setting and send it out to my hifi, so this review may help if you have a similar set up. I'm guessing the Stereo setting is just a fold down of the multi channel version, but what can I say? It sounds amazing!
In the sleevenotes, franks son Dweezil sais that the version of "Rollo" on this set is "Bitchen" and I have to agree, it is truly mind boggling. Frank is on fire and the arrangement is sublime. There's also a fantastic 12 minute take of "Chungas Revenge" which sounds very laid back and loose but with some very inspired playing. Some of the pieces here are already released on other albums in different mixes, but the album holds together well, and I still think that this is an essential purchase for any Zappa fan.

Zappa had been experimenting with surround channels since the early years, and these are tranfers of the tapes to prove it.
Some are pretty basic technically (just a mono rear surround) and others are more enveloping - thank God the music is very good as well. Fans will enjoy this one, along with the Halloween DVD-A
