Product Description

Product Description

Cult favorite Quarry, the killer for hire, is back in print with this debut novel and four other early works by author Max Allan Collins. They don't come any harder-boiled than Quarry. After carrying out his assignment in a down-at-heels river town, the gunman finds someone has played him for a sucker. To figure out who, he must solve the murder he committed. This new edition includes a previously unpublished Afterword by the author.

About the Author

Max Allan Collins, who created the graphic novel on which the Oscar-winning film Road to Perdition was based, has been nominated fifteen times for top honors by the Private Eye Writers of America and has won twice with Nate Heller historical mysteries. His vivid, tough and sexy novels about killer-for-hire Quarry have thrilled readers for four decades. He lives in Muscatine, Iowa with his wife, Barbara Collins, with whom he had collaborated on several novels and many short stories.

I love Max Allan Collins!
I have read all the Nathan Hellers and have now started on the Quarry books.
I really don't understand why some books work and some don't? I read a lot of books - probably 3+ per week and they can be real action on every page or more illustrative with less action. Why are some really absorbing and some just boring regardless of the genre or style of writing?

I wish I knew the answer. What I can say is that Max Allan Collins writes really absorbing books that are a mixture of illustrative and action. The pace is great and the the principal characters are pretty good too!
The Quarry series features a contract killer who isn't really apologetic - its just his job. This is not a promising sounding premise but somehow Collins makes it work really well.

Somehow, you can believe in Quarry and the stories just seem to draw you in. I have now read 14 of his books.

If you are new to Collins then you can buy the Nathan Heller books even more cheaply than these one's. Give him a try he is really good!

I can't believe that no one's reviewed this book since it went back into print. Older editions have gone for high prices in used stores and online. This is the first Quarry book and a really good start to the series. Quarry is a young vet returning from Vietnam who's life is further devastated when he comes home. He goes to work for The Broker, a mysterious old man with mob ties who sets Quarry up as a hitman. He does his job well but feels that he can never really trust his boss...

There's a lot of violent action and humor for a book that was part of the author's MFA thesis. If you are a fan of old 1970s crime writers like Richard Stark and George V Higgins, pick it up. The price goes up if it falls back out of print. Or if you're a fan of Collins's newer work, check it out. He was a good writer from the beginning.
