Biography

Hawkwind are an English rock band, one of the earliest space rock groups. Their lyrics favour urban and science fiction themes. They are also a noted precursor to punk rock and now are considered a link between the hippie and punk cultures.

Formed in November 1969 by singer-songwriter and guitarist Dave Brock, Hawkwind have gone through many incarnations and styles of music. Critic Jim Green… Read more in Amazon's Hawkwind Store

I have an early release copy of this thanks to the Atomhenge Club (cheers Vicky) and it's stupendous. I have been listening to this album for over 25 years now and this sounds as good a remaster as the Hawklords 25 years on.
It's a double CD release, in the style of the Hawklords album with unreleased versions, full extended versions and altenate takes. Does the world really need 4 versions of Damnation Alley and 4 versions of Spirit Of The Age on 1 release though? erm yes actually it does. I'd gotten a little bored of Spirit Of the Age from the original album, but the alternate versions on this really hit the mark, and as for Damnation Alley personally I think it's one of their all time great songs - listening to the progression of the song is fascinating.
On a final note if there's any more of the 1977 live recordings that make up the last 3 songs on Disc 2 can we have a full concert release please. Roll on Bolton, Liverpool and Porchester Hall (twice) for a celebration of 40 years.

Well i've finally got my hands on a copy, waited years for this on cd,couldn't believe it when my cd was delayed!!!i thought the cosmic gods were playing tricks on me ha ha.This is a genuine classic disc, the original lp was superb but this is off the planet, the remaster is beautiful each track from the original lp sounds fresher, cleaner and although i've had this on vinyl for 30+ years i'm hearing new sounds here and there, the ist 7 tracks of the original lp were superb and thats still the case, damnation alleyway possibly the most underated track from hawkwinds catalogue, spirit, quark and the magnificent hassan i sabbah just ripple from the speakers,is there more beautiful piece of music than ,fable',you could die happy with the ist seven tracks but the bonus tracks on disc 1 just make life even better, special mention to 'a minor jam',most bands spend entire careers and dont produce anything as good, listen to this with headphones on and you'll realise why on their day(which was quite often) the hawks were better than floyd( and i love floyd).
Disc two what can you say essentiall a rerun of the album with alternate and extended versions ,the extended version of fable' being particularly stunning and damnation alleyway well another 2 versions both superb,i cant get the smile off my face while typing this with the cd blasting in the background, does it get any better? well yes the whole thing rounds off with a trio of live tracks, .spirit' again and the two best tracks from future album pxr5 , namely robot and high rise, hats off to atomhenge for this disc and indeed the reissuing campaign in general.THIS IS A MUST HAVE DISC FROM A LEGENDARY BAND,BUY NOW,LEAVE YOUR WORRIES BEHIND AND ENTER HAWKSPACE,YOUR MIND IS READY IS YOUR SOUL?

timeless classic 16 April 2009
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
To my knowledge this is the fourth incarnation of this album on CD, and the one worth having. Not just an album or a collection of songs, but a work of art. The psychedelic prog approach of earlier Hawkwind albums had just about run out of steam, and it's immediate predecessor "Astounding Sounds" was notably iffy, if stalwartly declared a classic by fans. Quark saw the band's sound shift towards the tighter, sharper requirement of its era - dinosaur prog was dying and the audience wanted shorter, snappier songs. Hawkwind admirably managed to fuse the two. Included as bonus tracks are original extended versions which show that making shorter tracks had become an industry policy rather than a voluntary movement among artists. The remastering renders a fresh dimension of clarity to Calvert's lyrics and the rich electronic backing tracks. This is Hawkwind showing they were masters of their art, and not just a record label's vehicle for shifting sale units.

Like everyone else said.
Genre busting stuff. Punk? Prog? New Wave? I don't know and - at this distance of years - don't really care. It's a belter. Read more
