For complete newcomers to Planet X, their instrumental music sits in the realm of heavy rock that could easily be argued as metal, while the compositional structures owe heavily to jazz and progressive rock. The name originated as the title of American keyboardist Derek Sherinian's debut solo album on which Australians Virgil Donati and Brett Garsed appeared throughout as session players. Sherinian and Donati then reused the name when they formed an ongoing band with American guitarist Tony MacAlpine. Throughout the bands first two studio offerings with MacAlpine it emerged that drummer Donati was the heart of the Planet X sound, the Australian hording the lion's share of writing cedits. On this, the first album under the Planet X artist banner not to feature MacAlpine, 8 of the album's 9 tracks are written solely by Donati, one of which (Alien Hip-Hop) is a reused composition from Virgil's earlier "On The Virg" project. The majority of compositions coming from the drummer, it's not so surprising to hear that Planet X's music has a focus heavily on the rhythm and groove of songs rather than a typical rock melody, instead there's complex riffs and King Crimson-esque fast bits mixed with moody chord sequences and outright jazz-fusion type solo slots aplenty.

On Quantum Virgil Donati's drumming reigns over proceedings rarely leaving time for listener's even vaguely familiar with drumming to remember what it's like to not be amazed. Though Derek Sherinian only gets one cowriting credit on the whole album, his instantly recognisable keyboard sound stamps his presence unforgettably over the album as has become usual. The temporarily re-instated Brett Garsed admirably handles guitar duties for the majority of the album with an impressive range of chameleonic styles.

I bought this because Alan Holdsworth plays on it and it was even better than I thought it was going to be. Alan Holdsworth is outstanding of course, but so is Planet X, this is tight, musical playing by very talented musicians.

The driving percussion and bass line and rhythmic variation is extraordinary. Note that this is complex music that could put some of the classical output to shame. It is so refreshing to hear music that is innovative and creative as this is. As other reviewers have commented, each time you listen this music offers something new. There is just so much to it and so much going on.

It is always very interesting to see what kind of music Alan Holdsworth with his incredibly high standards is prepared to put his name to. It is very easy to see why in this case.

It feels like a mix of the Johansson brothers with Alan Holdsworth plus an overlay of metal - elements of Apocalyptica, metal prog fusion.....etc..? But this is no crude headbanging outing, this is just a fantastic, edgy demonstration of sublime musical powers.

I recently listened to this music while travelling on the TGV from Dijon to Paris and I can only say that speeds in excess of 150 mph come quite close to explaining the power of this music. Imagine listening to this while hurtling through the frozen medieval landscapes of Burgundy (or better still, give it a try before the snow melts!)

Buy without hesitation. We need more like this. Absolutely fantastic.

I won't write a whole essay, but this album is a must buy for any serious fans. Personally, it's their best yet. For any drummers out there, such as myself, your in for a treat. Virgil does some mind blowing stuff (as usual) that will not disappoint. As for Sherinian and Bret Garsed, their work is simply top-notch as what we would expect. For any prog rock fans out there, get it.

This album is heavy with amazing musicianship from all concerned. This is rock music expanded with almost jazz rock interplay set in the context of heavy rock/prog tunes. recommended if you like your music heavy/progish and enjoy bands/players who can expand themselves beyond 3 chord triads and 12 bar blues. This album also features British guitar genius Allan Holdsworth on 2 tracks.
