I bought this battery because I wanted a decent battery, but not a genuine one because of the price. A genuine Apple one wasn't really an option for my ancient MacBook that has been around and has the scars to prove it :) I thought this one would be a good compromise because it's a specific brand although not genuine Apple, and thus had a bit more credibility to me than a no-name brand, while still being very cheap.

I'm glad I was right. The battery charged up fine, while it's meant to be 5600 mAh, Coconutbattery only reports it as 5200 mAh (same as the original battery) but that might be because its battery monitoring is limited to the maximum capacity of a genuine battery. It seems to last a long time, I haven't yet ran it down to zero but I was demoing a website for 2 hours running OS X Lion and it was down to about 65%, which is pretty good for a 2007 MacBook. I recently got this MacBook second-hand so I don't know how long it lasted when the original battery was new but this is more than I expected. Indicated battery life is between 3.5 and 5 hours depending on CPU load and screen brightness and I haven't calibrated it yet. The battery also has a working temperature sensor (visible through the free Coconutbattery app), even when charging for a long time it didn't get above 31 degrees Celcius (confirmed by touch) so I feel confident about the safety, although I never leave laptops charging unattended anyway, even brand new ones.

The fit isn't great, the edges of the plastic stick out a bit at the bottom, however the battery doesn't move around in its slot as was reported about some no-name batteries. It sits very snugly. It's just the edges of the plastic being not completely flush with the bottom of the laptop.

This cheap alternative to the branded Apple battery which is about £100 is well worth the price paid. Although the rated power is not what you get when installed in your macbook. For the money you could get a few to swap out as and when you need to. Overall good quality, fits ok if not completely flush to the body of the case but for a fraction of the price of a branded Apple battery pack it's fantastic.

So I've had this battery for a week or two now, and have only done 3 cycles on it. Fits almost perfectly - other reviews stating out by a mil are probably fair, but to be honest I doubt most people would notice. You do notice the colour difference though, but 1) Its underneath the machine you can't see it! 2) It might be my Macbook that has faded over the years & 3) It costs a fifth of the Apple equivalent!
So far lifetime has been variable, I imagine it will take a few cycles for this to settle down. On the first one I left it at 20% and came back 10 minutes later it had shut down - not good. But since then it has been more stable. I would have marked the star rating down for this, but then I remembered £17. I'll update after a few more months and see how it goes. £17 though - crazy good!

UPDATE: 12th July.
Having done several cycles now, the lifetime issues mentioned above still exist. The predictor on the display is nice and steady from 100% down to mid 60s%, lasting roughly an hour to an hour and a half depending what you're doing, then it falls off the cliff and tells me I'm at 7% and need to plug in. I've then got about a minute to find my plug! For my current use of the Macbook this is ok as its just for backup and some iTunes, and it's now even cheaper?!
Not a perfect item, and I'm downgrading its star value, but still a decent buy as long as you know what you're getting.

UPDATE: 8th October.
Thought I'd been imagining it but the battery has ballooned and has a large bulge in the middle. So much so my click button below the keyboard wouldn't function. Have removed the battery, and it'll be binned now. Outside returns policy, will email them but don't expect any joy. It lasted 5 months from purchase, but probably only cycled 20 times maximum as I hardly use this machine. Not very good.

Well it started off OK, after a couple of charges and a full discharge later and the battery stabilised at around 3hrs 20 mins capacity. Having run the MacBook on external power for the next 3 weeks aside from the battery randomly waxing and waneing between 95 and 100%, it appeared fine; then I really tested it. I left the MacBook running a Blu Ray rip to my NAS without external power. This was to take 55 mins and some 30GB later had managed it. However as I didn't get back in time the MacBook had pressumably gone from On, to Sleep to completely Off in a little under 4 hours. On restarting, the battery is now refusing to charge and in a condition of "replace now", ironically the state my original battery reported after 4 years, unfortunately this significantly cheaper imitation lasted 205 weeks less. I am in the throws of seeking a replacement for my replacement and will update the review in the coming months. I would say for now having read similar accounts you run the gauntlet with this one. As for the fit, a little gap perhaps 0.5mm but hardly noticeable.
