Product Description

One of the less debilitating, but no less frustrating dangers to contend during a day's shooting is the loss of a lens cap. Nothing disarms a photographer quite like knowing that a lens has absolutely no protection while it is most vulnerable to incurring damage. Lens caps can easily find their way into sewers, streambeds, rivers, or off the side of a cliff on a popular tourist lookout, well beyond the reach of protective railing. Without a lens cap to protect a lens, the risk of incurring scratches during storage and transportation becomes all too real, and weighs heavily on the photographer's mind. Solve this issue completely by planning ahead and always carrying spare lens caps in your equipment carry bag. Generic replacement lens caps for various sizes can be found for mere pounds. A danger for which there is no protective tools against is including strangers' children in photographs. If a photographer even considers pointing a camera at someone's child, that photographer should first ask permission from that child's parent. This simple step can help prevent an angry parent and perhaps broken camera equipment.

The pinch-style lens caps are a really smart and simple innovation by Nikon. These are essentially direct copies, and they are far cheaper than the overpriced (at least in the UK/Irl) spares that Nikon offer.

Upsides:
Cheap! Buy three!

Its threaded, by that I mean it has a piece of thread to attach to some bit of your camera. This is a good idea, and saves drilling and threading your existing lens caps like I have seem some people do. However the thread is not great quality and it will snap if you give it a suitably violent tug (however you're more likely to just pop off the cap, see 'springs' below) or with persistent wear.

Heres the downsides:
Cheaper plastic, so its a bit lighter but also a bit more brittle, so don't expect it to last a lifetime, unlike the Nikon ones which seem to last forever. Also, the weakness of the plastic seems to allow the bit that comes in to contact with the filter thread to wear away enough that it exacerbates problem 2 below.

The internal spring is rubbish, presumably because it uses about 50% of the steel that the Nikon ones do. This means that the slidey bits don't grip the filter threads firmly and there is more chance that the lens cap will pop off if you brush up against something or pull it out of a bag too quickly. So its quite easy to inadvertently lose these things (but this is circular, since you're reading this because you want to replace a lost Nikon cap, right?)

Recommendation: Buy if you're in a habit of losing lens caps, none of the longevity problems above will be yours. If not, get the Nikon ones. Yeah, I know, the Nikon ones are a total rip-off on price, but they will last as long as your lens does.

Excellent value 21 Nov 2010
How Nikon stockists can justify charging up to £9 for a branded 52mm lens cap is totally beyond me. This item is just as good, at a fraction of the price. I bought five.

Not a quality (as the title runs). The lid springs are quite stiff and sticky. The cap doesn't feet tightly to Nikon lens 35mm/1.8G To make matterworse, the photo shows an "ear" on the outside, whereas the cap I received has a hole on inside of the cap (which looks DYI). As the hole is on the inside, the cord has to go under the cap and that's prevents tight fit. Stupid design - and misleading photo and bad product
