Book Description

This lively, practical text presents a fresh and comprehensive approach to doing qualitative research. The book offers a unique balance of theory and clear-cut choices for customizing every phase of a qualitative study. A scholarly mix of classic and contemporary studies from multiple disciplines provides compelling, field-based examples of the full range of qualitative approaches. Readers learn about adaptive ways of designing studies, collecting data, analyzing data, and reporting findings. Key aspects of the researcher's craft are addressed, such as fieldwork options, the five phases of data analysis (with and without using computer-based software), and how to incorporate the researcher's “declarative” and “reflective” selves into a final report.

Ideal for graduate-level courses, the text includes:
* Discussions of ethnography, grounded theory, phenomenology, feminist research, and other approaches.
* Instructions for creating a study bank to get a new study started.
* End-of-chapter exercises and a semester-long, field-based project.
* Quick study boxes, research vignettes, sample studies, and a glossary.
* Previews for sections within chapters, and chapter recaps.
* Discussion of the place of qualitative research among other social science methods, including mixed methods research.

Product Description

Review

"Yin should be commended for connecting readers to the discipline and joy of doing qualitative research. This book makes qualitative methods accessible to a broad audience. It includes practical advice and connects new researchers with well-chosen examples from a diverse array of rigorous qualitative studies. The discussion of the analysis process is a major strength of the book." - Michelle C. Bligh, School of Behavioral and Organizational Sciences, Claremont Graduate University, USA

"This book is both practical and scholarly. I like Yin's conceptualization of the five features of qualitative research. I also appreciate the lack of jargon and the use of concrete examples. I will recommend this book to colleagues as a practical guide and will consider using it as a class text." - Lance D. Fusarelli, Department of Leadership, Policy, and Adult and Higher Education, North Carolina State University, USA

3.0 out of 5 stars too wishy-washy 5 May 2014

Yin takes a very generic approach to qualitative research. He is not an advocate for using previously-developed qualitative methodologies, and does not give his reader any extended examples of well-done qualitative research. Utilizing established methodologies and underpinning philosophical and (when appropriate) theoretical frameworks add both depth and legitimacy to this method, and to downplay their importance is a mistake. I think these two points make this book much less useful, and followers of his advice more likely to wind up with a weak product in the end. Creswell's book is much better. Also consider Flicks (2006) book. And of course the classics: Lincoln & Guba, Spradley, Sandelowski.

5.0 out of 5 stars When all else fails, read the book. 24 May 2013

This is another Yin book and useful like all the others - a PhD is a step by step process and this book provides a guide to the early and mid stage steps - it is easy to read and the layout is clear and logical - don't even try to start withou a copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Robert Yin gives me my PhD 1 Mar. 2014

I would probably say that I owe my PhD to Dr. Yin. Awesome help! It provides a guideline concise enough for a grade schooler to start his/her own qualitative project but comprehensive enough for a doctoral student
