More About the Author

David Silverman trained as a sociologist at the London School of Economics and the University of California, Los Angeles. He taught for 32 years at Goldsmiths', University of London. He is interested in conversation and discourse analysis and he has researched medical consultations and HIV-test counselling.

He is the author of Interpreting Qualitative Data (Fourth Edition,2012), Doing Qualitative Research (Third Edition,2010) and A Very Short, Fairly Interesting, Reasonably Cheap Book about Qualitative Research (2007). He is the editor of Qualitative Research (Third Edition,2011) and the Sage Series, Introducing Qualitative Methods. In recent years, he has offered short, hands-on workshops in qualitative research for universities in Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia.
Now retired from full-time work, David aims to watch one hundred days of cricket a year. He also enjoys voluntary work in an old people's home where he sings with residents with dementia and strokes.

Product Description

Qualitative Research provides some real insight into qualitative practices―the “whys” and the “what,” enabling one to become a more sensitive and thoughtful research practitioner...what Silverman and the contributors to this third edition have done is to provide readers―the graduate students, researchers, teachers and perhaps those involved in funding qualitative research―with ideas that develop and enrich our sensibilities about the nature and practice of qualitative research

Bernard Smith
The Weekly Qualitative Report

Silverman's latest edition of this well regarded text aims to elucidate current developments in qualitative research. In my opinion, it is well positioned to achieve its stated purpose, as it presents a collection of key readings on a range of contemporary interests in qualitative research... This edition has been refreshed and reinvigorated, ensuring that it maintains pace with the contemporary world of qualitative research and the concerns and developments encountered in this world. This is a particular strength of the book... It is particularly suited to the qualitative research neophyte who wishes to quickly grasp the key features of the subject areas addressed. Academic staff should therefore consider this text an important adjunct to modules relating to the design and conduct of qualitative reseach in contemporary research settings.

This is a Silverman book, so It is going to be great, even indispensable, I think. No I haven't read it. I have personally paid for the prof. dr. 's villa--or maybe just one of the marble statues--in Capri, just by buying every edition that comes out, whether I know it's actually been revised or not, and even later if I can't find the differences. I don't care--only the best for me. However, I would really appreciate a guide to the revision be available--ie, how different is this? If I just bought the 2nd edition, do I really need the third--a real account of the differences, not the usual blather in the intro that gives a list of some things...Dr. S, if you are listening, we also need a special bookcase (presumably with five free rows or so) to house the collection. It's expensive being your fan.

While the book was good at discussing different types of qualitative research, I had hoped for something that would basically take me through the process, from beginning to end, which it does not do. Still it has proved to be a good reference source.
