Synopsis

Quaker faith and practice is useful in guiding personal worship and for offering inspiration from those who have gone before. It offers thoughts on different aspects of life and help in dealing with problems, such as old age, a life of service to the community, sharing the world's resources. It is made up of sections beginning with the 'Advices and queries', a chapter on approaching God in worship and in prayer, church government at various levels, caring for one another, responsibilities within the society, procedures for marriage, funerals and memorial meetings, and then extracts dealing with the origins of our Religious Society, living faithfully today, personal journeys, close relationships, social responsibility, the peace testimony, the unity of creation and reflections on our experiences. The book ends with sections on unity and diversity, and on sharing and passing on the Quaker experience. The book shows the ways of life, both individual and corporate, which have sprung from our faith and the testimonies into which we have been guided.

It includes accounts of the lives of individual Friends whose commitment is an example to us and the statements and descriptions of our faith that spring from our experience. The last chapter indicates some of the ways in which the Holy Spirit is still known among us challenging us to create anew a Society in which human lives are changed.

It might be best to read this for real as part of your local Quaker Meeting, an aid to 'centring down' with fellow members of the Meeting, each small paragraph something to latch onto and mull over. But I have also used it as a common place book, an aid to contemplation at home. It is the ultimate in group authorship, gradually assembled and selected and winnowed over more than three hundred years, representing a diversity as well as summary of Quaker viewpoints. It ranges from reflective chapters on approaches to God worship and prayer, living faithfully, personal journey, close relationships, social responsibility and the peace testimony, to more practical chapters to guide members in this DIY religion through procedures, membership, caring for one another and holding different types of service.

What an invaluable book! I have never read a book which puts across its message so clearly, consisely and beautifully. By filling the book with genuine Quaker experiences and testimonies from the 17th century right through to the 20th century it literally brings the book to life. This book could so easily have been written in the cold, hard style of a texbook or dogmatic scripture but this has been completely avoided. It seems to embody the very essence of Quakerism which is in itself a Christian division of immense wisdom and knowledge.

'Quaker Faith & Practice' is, at its heart, an amalgamation of Quaker insights, discernment and teachings written and revised periodically for over 300 years. It is all the knowledge & experiences of members of the Religious Society of Friends since it was formed in 1652 compacted into one invaluable tome which helps to guide Friends in their everyday life (when coupled with the Holy Spirit) The pages contain messages of love, respect, compassion and tolerance for all people irrespective of race, creed or gender. It teaches the universal love and presence of Jesus Christ within each and every one of us.

The book doesn't just list Quaker religious beliefs but also gives details on their internal structure. How the Society functions and helps vulnerable people in Britain and abroad and how every single facet of its organisation is influenced by God. It also covers Quaker weddings, funerals & even how a person becomes a member of the Society as well as alot of other information.

An invaluable book & point of reference to Quakers & attenders alike.
