4.0 out of 5 stars Still Great, 2 Feb 2006
This review is from: Quake III Gold: Quake III Arena & Quake III Team Arena (Video Game)
When it was released, Quake III had one of, if not, the best graphics engines around. Because of that, it still stands up against some of the latest FPS offerings. As a First Person Shooter (FPS) it is immensely playable and with varying difficulty it is a great place to begin your FPS playing experience.

The game’s AI is spectacular; although on Nightmare mode the AI controlled characters have an uncanny ability to pick you out in a crowded room. However, far from taking away from the game, this makes you want to play even more – just for vengeance.

What is necessary for revenge? Some top class weaponry – that’s what. And this is one department where Quake III, definitely, does not hold back. With Lightening Guns and Rocket Launchers at your disposal there are just so many ways to humiliate your opponents.

With two basic modes – the normal game and skirmish – there is enough game play here to keep you going for weeks. Watch as your stats increase as you play your way through the normal game, or choose your opponents, time limit and frag limit in skirmish mode for pure melee action. One thing’s for sure – it’s kill or be killed.

If you can drag yourself away from the excitement of the main game there’s plenty more fun when you take Quake III online to compete against other players. This brings another element to the game as you begin to take great satisfaction in every frag.

Quake III Gold is one of those games that quite simply, you have to own. Despite there being games out now with better physics, AI etc. you can always be sure that Quake III will give you a great gaming experience. And as an older game it will run on most PCs and Macs.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Mother of all battles.., 15 Dec 2006

= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Quake III Gold: Quake III Arena & Quake III Team Arena (Video Game)
Quake games spawned DeathMatch, a fairly mindless (LOL) game in which all one does is run around and frag other players (skill--more about that latter).

The first two Quake games have a hint of a story whilst Quake3 is a player's Valhalla, a place where DeathMatch is all.

The idea within the game is that the best players (the bots and you) have been gathered together to fight for the amusement of the Vadrigar. BTW, The Vadrigar do not figure at all in player's experience of game play.

Your experience is of playing your way through a sucession of 'maps' against bots. I have to say that the bots in Quake3Arena are fairly efficient, but not particually clever. Q3A has the option of team-play and capture the flag. Once you know the maps (erm...best if you can run them backwards ;) then you are ready to go on-line.

If no on-line games appear in the menu, your edition of Quake Gold WILL need updating (go look for the latest 'point release' to update. Think it is 1.32 now?). Q3A comes with an auto-updater, the ID software web site will give you more information.

You may only need to update if you want to play on-line. I can't remember if the Gold edition runs without the CD? If you update, you will not need to use the CD again.

Quake3Team-Arena:
Q3TA provides you with more beautiful maps, and some more games, more weapons etc. It is a poor version of Unreal Tournament (the Q3TA bots are even less intellegent than the Q3A ones) but loads of fun and will run on Windows XP and a Mac (UT wont play on my XP machine).

Q3A mods:
One of the best things about the Quake universe are the mods' . Once you have Quake3 installed and up-dated then you can download many excellent games for free. Freeze-tag and ThreeWave are both brillant.

Meanwhile, skill..Quake3 has some weird physics which can be exploited by the dedicated player. To learn the inner secrets, go get DeFrag mod.

And finally...If you buy (and you should, you really should)
--Welcome to the Quake community--

5.0 out of 5 stars Quake 3 Gold, 30 Aug 2003
This review is from: Quake III Gold: Quake III Arena & Quake III Team Arena (Video Game)
Ordered this today, Quake 3 Arena and Team Arena are great games.
When ordering it seems a little dodgy as it says in the receipt (mac) which implies it's only for mac, but according to the idsoftware website it is a pc/mac hybrid cd!

Happy Fragging!
