Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

As in its dozens of first-person shooter ancestors, id Software and Activision's Quake 3: Arena transports players into a violent, virtual world filled with deadly weapons, impressive power-ups and intense combat. Players compete on 26 maps in either death match (free-for-all or team play), with goals to rack up as many kills as possible; or capture the flag, a team-oriented game with scoring based on the number of enemy flag captures. Though presenting the best death-match experience around, Quake 3's two game types lack the variation and originality of a similar game, Epic's Unreal Tournament.

Although you'll need the latest video card and computer hardware, it's impossible to dispute the sheer beauty of Quake 3's 3-D engine. The 26 maps are filled with exquisite architecture and impressive special effects; further, Quake 3 provides dozens of highly detailed player models to choose from.

If you've played other id Software first-person shooters, the weapons should all look familiar: machine gun, shotgun, plasma gun, grenade launcher, rocket launcher, lightning gun, railgun and the BFG 10K. Though impressively rendered and balanced, you've likely used them before in id's Doom, Quake or any number of other first-person action games.

Hopping online and competing against other Quake 3: Arena players worldwide requires only a 56K or better Internet connection and a few mouse clicks. Quake 3 offers an infinitely replayable multiplayer experience (and a violent one--not for youngsters), but an unsatisfying solo game. Its single-player tournament mode--a series of death matches against computer AI bots--serves simply as a massive training exercise for multiplay.--Doug Radcliffe Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Quake 3 a lifestyle of its own 9 Jan 2008
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I have played this game since 1998 starting out on the dreamcast version
replete with dreamcast mouse and keyboard, then I moved on to the pc and started to play in jolt leagues and clanbase nation cups,so I would like to think I know a good game when I see it and one which if your into multiplayer will keep you coming back for more.

Quake 3 is without doubt one of the most skilled multiplayer experiences
from teamdeathmatch to dueling not to mention Ctf.Easy to learn but years to master, admittedly its an oldy now a real O.A.P of a game but like any fine wine it gets better with age and there is still plenty of players out there now,of course there is not so many big lans as once was but this
game has just been named as being used in this years E.S.W.C (electronic sports world cup)

There has without doubt never been a game with such hi calibre players
as the quake series in my honest opinion.

The list of top players and I have not included lots is endless. If you love competitive first person shooters then buy this and get ready to have a lot of fun,if however you want a sinlge player experience look elsehwere.

As to Sir Yawnalots comments, all I can say is "to each their own" but boy
have some of your comments regarding the whole quake series never been so wrong add to that the fact that it has never been anything less then a hit.

Shame the same can not be said for Quake 4 but thats what you get by letting Raven near anything.

5.0 out of 5 stars Has you Quaking at the knees... 13 Oct 2001
By A Customer
I first bought this game about a year ago, i was totally addicted after the first game. Now over a year onwards i still love this game! It's without a doubt the best multiplayer shooting game experience, and also an excellent single player game as you pit your reactions and skill against bot's that can be set to an easy or "Godlike" difficulty. You will never be bored of this, and every online experience is different. The best game EVER? Maybe!

5.0 out of 5 stars Q3 - best shoot 'em up ever made 19 Nov 2003
By A Customer
Basically, the people who have complained about the 'poor gameply' are simply poor players.
This is a game of intense action... you need to have awesome reactions and be very accurate (and with time this will happen if it doesnt straight away)
The game is fast and simple, but it works so incredibly well.
For its time it is an awe-inspiring game. With lush, haunting tech-noir style levels and sci-fi characters and weapons it is very stylish, with a consistant dark theme to it.
Each of the 'bots' (the computer controlled players) has a personality. Doom, for example (the character gamers play as in the DOOM series), is an egotistical and damn good opponent, making comments when winning and losing etc.
If you do purchase this game you will be granted access to the online gaming - fantastic. You will find, without doubt, some of the most skilled gamers in the world playing quake3, because its all about skill in my opinion.
there are patches available to make it an even slicker running game with improved gameplay also.
there are thousands of skiled level makers around to - dont just stick to the included maps (which are basically bloody amazing).
in one word, i'd describe this game as - essential.
thank you IDgames

2.0 out of 5 stars Great Graphics Engine - Shame About the Game 27 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Quake3 proves what I always thought about ID games...they write fantastic game engines but pretty poor games. The single player game in quake3 is so poor it's untrue and in multiplayer - unreal tournament is miles better. To see what a good GAME developer does with code as good as ID graphics engines checkout halflife and Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. Quake3 is just a technical demo - it isn't a game. The two stars here are earned on technical merit not artistic impression.
