Book Description

16 Sep 2004

A world where nuclear warheads can be hidden in a briefcase ... A world where bio-plagues are held suspended in a teardrop ...

On an Earth where conventional armies are powerless to defend against the devastation wrought by single assassins, the secret organisation known as SPIRAL exists to fight a shadow war against fanatics and rogue states of every creed and political persuasion. Remorseless, unstoppable, of every country and of none, SPIRAL conducts its covert operations throughout the world in a never-ending battle for humanity's survival.

But now SPIRAL's toughest operative, Carter, faces a new and terrifying challenge. A machine has been developed which can hold the earth to ransom: capable of wreaking seismic havoc, causing earthquakes and eruptions on a global scale.

Its name is Quake and it must be destroyed.

Review

Hugely entertaining and packed with more explosive action scenes than is probably decent, SPIRAL starts off loud and ends in a bang (WATERSTONE'S BOOKS QUARTERLY)

A new writer who knows what a regular reader sitting on the bus wants - action ... Pure Die Hard, pure Rambo. This has got to be a film, surely! (LADSMAG)

Book Description

A fast-paced, high-octane, near-future action thriller for readers of Andy McNab and matthew Reilly.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced, but poorly executed 20 Jan 2006
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
If you enjoy films starring Arnie, or the Muscles from Brussels, or... you will probably enjoy this book too. It has pace and a certain intensity, but it is ultimately insubstantial and lightweight.
Three aspects of the book really irritated me as I read it:
- (this is a bit trivial I know) irrelevant details of motorbike technology "glancing down at the KTM LC7 757cc motorbike, ... packing 289b.h.p and a torque rating of 174 lb-ft..." do not add anything to the story
- while I can suspend my disbelief about the metamorphosis of a human to a Nex, for some reason the all seeing, all powerful ECube really narks me.. it's just a James Bond gadget with no basis in reality
-but most of all, no matter how far the fall, how strong the opponent, how many bullets are fired, how desperate the situation, Carter always survives; no matter how many opponents, he always shoots them (in the face, from the back of a motorbike at long range, with a 9mm pistol for heavens sake!). He's more immune to pain than the Green Knight in MP & the Holy Grail - Shot in the back? just keep on walking and fighting; broken your knuckles? just keep on hitting with them.
And it's this last superhero like immortality that really grates with me. Too often the author takes the easy way out by making Carter win against impossible odds when in any sort of remotely logical conclusion he would be sausage meat. It smacks of lazy writing to me.
So, you pays your money... If you like this fast paced nonsense then you'll probably love the book. But I didn't.

5.0 out of 5 stars QUAKE - the best read you will ever have! 17 Nov 2004
Format:Paperback
Superb. What else can I say? QUAKE grabs you by the guts and pulls you along at a breakneck pace. The writing style is incredibly original, I have never read anything like it. Andy McNab and Chris Ryan, eat your hearts out, you will never touch this geezer. It rushes along, page after page of intelligent story and brilliant set-pieces. QUAKE is an adrenaline high. QUAKE is a kick to the groin. QUAKE is the best. When's the next book out?
