Mr Brothomstates offers up a 6 track EP of experimental noises. It seems that he is influenced by the sounds of just about every single Warp artist to date from Autechre to Aphex to Squarepusher to Plaid. It could have sounded like a pale imitation. It actually comes out quite well! The first track heaviliy effects vocals, time stretches and chops up an electronic hip hop groove with an eerie atmospheric synth over the top. Jak ... reminds me of earlier Autechre (which is good in my book!), shuffly skippy beats, urgent electronica with twinkling synths. We move onto Loose Fit which reminds me of Gantz Graf style Autechre. Either this kinda thing floats your boat or not, you can either be a fan of heavily effected intricately programmed digital music, or it just comes out sounding like a agitated fax machine to your ears. I hit the second school unfortunately. Vleade continues in a similar mad electronic vein, more listenable, before panning out into a very nice deep little electronic track. Works for me, leads you into thinking the track is going one direction before heading off in a different one. Now comes Adozenaday. This is why I bought the EP. You'll recognise the intro to this from the Sprite 'Goblin' advert. I remember hearing it for the the first time thinking 'this is a bit special for advert music!'. And it was, lovely chilled track which heads down the Plaid paths of orchestral electronica. Brothomstates vs Bill Yard sounds different to the usual Warp sound, possibly Brothomstates shining through with a piece of individual quality. Dubby electronica, lovely synths.
All in all, if you like Warp output, you'll be right at home here. You'll spot the influences, recognise the structures and sounds right off. A good EP with some good standout qualities and one track just a bit garbled to my ears. Good purchase if you want a taster of the Brothomstates world. I can also recommend the full album Claro, it stands out from the Warp crowd a bit more than this EP.

This EP grabs your attention from the moment the mangled beats of 'Qtio' slide out of the speakers before mutating into one of the most disturbed hip hop tracks you'll ever hear. The other tracks that follow are just as enthralling; the disorienting synths of 'Jak Got Stuck In Canada...' through to the electronic dub of 'Brothomstates Vs. Bill Yard'. One of the stand-out tracks for me is 'Vleade' - a relatively simple but still effective track with a smart bassline and cool swathes of melody but all the tracks are shot through with brilliance.

Warp's latest signing Brothomstates is another amazing talent that the record lables seems to have the knack finding once in a while.
Qtio mixes experimental ambient ( a'la Aphex Twin ) with infusions of hard hip hop beats...but it's the haunting melodies and stunningly moody soundscapes that really gives the EP an superb vibe...highly recommended!
