Book Description

Mar 1999
Qigong (pronounced "chee-gong") is an ancient Chinese health-care modality that has fascinated people throughout the millennia. Based on the fundamental principles of traditional Chinese medicine, Qigong is a system that teaches us to understand Qi, our bioelectric life force, and use it to heal ourselves and others. Qigong: Essence of the Healing Dance will give readers some of the basics of the outward "exercises" that are normally associated with the practice of Qigong, as well as detailing movements from such systems as Wuji Qigong, Bagua Xun Dao Gong and Shaolin Qigong. More than merely outlining these practices, this book will take readers on a journey of exploration into the essence of this fascinating, though little understood, healing practice. Masters from around the world-such as the ninety-two-year-old Duan Zhi Liang of Beijing, Canadian healer Effie Poy Yew Chow and American Jerry Johnson-contribute their personal insights into the wonders of Qigong. People from various walks of life, all of whom have achieved healing as a result of practicing Qigong, share their powerful experiences. Author Garri Garripoli, himself a practitioner of Qigong for the past twenty years, renders the book fascinating yet easy-to-read. He expertly guides readers on this once-in-a-lifetime journey, inspiring them to look deeper into healing in order to discover how to move beyond the standards and limitations of Western medicine. Qigong: Essence of the Healing Dance shows readers that we all carry within ourselves the ability to heal, and encourages them to tap into that innate gift and dance their own dance of life. Readers are sure to find this book fascinating, even life changing. It is a must-read for anyone intrigued by the mystique of ancient Eastern healing arts or seeking a daily practice that promotes and maintains full-body well-being.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best! 26 Jun 1999

Format:Paperback
It's about time that a book like this has been made. Garripoli's understanding of qigong shines forth brightly. All the stories by different qigong practitioners are fascinating. They bring much light to this wonderful art. I've been "playing" qigong for only a few months but the results have been dramatic. I'm in better shape and healthier than when I could ride 50 miles on a bicycle, do 45 one arm pushups, etc. The aches and pains have quickly disappeared, I need less sleep, and my immune system is much stronger. As this book clearly shows, qigong is easy, it can be done by anyone: teenagers to people in their 90's, active or disabled. One of the last parts of the book has a few excellent Shaolin self-healing techniques that are worth the price of the book alone. Get this book, you won't be disappointed!

Many of us ask ourselves questions such as "How can I make my life slow down?" or "Is there any way I can improve my health through relaxation exercises?"

Author, television producer and Qigong teacher Garri Garripoli not only started asking himself these questions at an early age, but he stuck with it. In fact, he has dedicated a good part of his life to creating a kind of Odyssey of discovery, which he shares in his new book, "Qigong: the essence of the dance."

Garripoli brings the reader in direct contact with several of the world's leading authorities on Qigong, providing a section of interviews with these living treasures. He also provides simple imagery that helps us get started in manipulating the energy force that the Chinese call "qi". He asks us to "suck in your belly as far as you can when you exhale," or to "imagine your hand passing through a field of energy." We learn about applying it to enhance our own energy and health, and how to have the same positive effects on those around us.

Garripoli's voyage continues. Next, we will stay tuned for the PBS documentary he created about his recent two-year trip to China.

The only reason I give this a 3 and not a 5 is because the descriptions of the Qigong are difficult to work out, but having a transcript of his Qigong documentary is a good idea. Buy the DVD I highly recommend it for it's clear instructions and the beautiful scenery where it is filmed.
