Product Description

Product Description
Three leading ship historians join forces to write the definitive history of Cunard's Queen Elizabeth 2, the world's most famous ocean liner. Beginning with an overview of the social and cultural context from which the liner emerged, the design process is followed from the earliest proposals for Q3 to the detailed design of Q4. The story continues with the John Brown shipyard successfully tendering for the construction and recounts the many challenges which beset the famous shipbuilder in the periods before, during and after QE2 was being built.Thereafter, the ship's sea trials, troubled inauguration and successful maiden voyage are described, partly through first hand accounts. The long career and the many subsequent changes carried out to the ship are then illustrated against the cultural and economic backgrounds of rapidly changing societies in Britain and the USA. QE2 has stood the test of time remarkably well - but, since the 1980s, the liner has gradually been rebuilt from a futuristic Modernist icon into a 'retro' ship, based upon nostalgia for a lost 'golden age' of inter-war liner travel and the reasons for these changes are also explained. Bringing the story right up-to-date, the book concludes with an account of the final voyage to Dubai.

5.0 out of 5 stars QE2 - Britain's Greatest Liner, 1 Jan 2009

This is indeed without exception one of the finest books that has ever been published about a truely fantastic and much missed classic ocean liner. What more can I say?

5.0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Book on QE2's design and construction, 1 Jan 2009
By Hall W. Coons (Marion, Maryland, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
"QE2: Britain's Greatest Liner" is the definitive book on the ships original design and construction. The history of the shipyard that built her and the financial condition of the shipbuilding industry in 1960's Britain was particularly interesting. The book contains interesting stories of the ships interior designers and how these men and women competed over how, and in what style, to outfit the liner.

As a long time fan of the ship, I learned to appreciate the circa 1969 design of the ship from the book. By the time of my first sailing on the ship in 1974 significant changes had already been made to the original interiors.

Many changes were made to the ship over the ensuing years, the vast majority of which the authors do not like. However, the ship did remain profitable (while other liners went out of business) and it would have been more interesting if the authors had included some more information on the ships profitability in later years despite (or because of?) her many design changes.

My only other critism is that the book did not capture the love that the passengers and crew had for the ship. This aspect of the QE2 was unique to her compared to other recent passenger ships and could have been further explored.

However, this is an excellent (Five Star) book and well worth the money for anyone interesting in passenger shipping or Modern design. Highly Recommended. Hall Coons, Maryland, USA

5.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate QE2 book, 21 Dec 2008
By Isabelle Prondzynski (Mullingar, Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The ultimate QE2 book, written by three of the greatest experts on this wonderful ship, it is a book which I cannot recommend more warmly. My other lucky friends, QE2 experts themselves, are delighted to own it and telling me to start reading quickly. Sadly, I cannot do so yet. I pre-ordered this book from Amazon in October, a month before its publication in mid-November, and now, another month later, I am still waiting for delivery and have not been given a confirmed date. Were I living in Britain, I could have got it via a bookshop...

This book tells the history of the last great liner, her building in Clydebank, the social history of the period when she was built, with a lot of information on her wonderful design both external and internal, and her life history up to and including her recent delivery to Dubai, where she will be taken apart again and turned into a floating hotel.

I shall be able to add some more once I have read the book for myself -- which I hope will be soon!
