5.0 out of 5 stars Introducing Aamir Khan and the lovely Juhi Chawla, 11 May 2003
This film is truly remarkable, a love story which catches the essence of Romeo and Juliet, Raj-Aamir Khan falls in love with the daughter of a rival family Reshmi-Juhi Chawla, their love for each other means more bloodshed. Their Fathers despise each other and do not want this relationship But Raj and Reshmi are both determined and do not listen to their fathers, an emotional story, Lovely Songs- especially Aye mere Humsifar- this film will go down in history of indian movies. An epic tale, which leads to the ultimate conclusion- But Raj and Reshmi are finally together. Lets let the sun go down and begin another journey- Qayamat se qayamat tak- a tragic and epic tale of two lovers brought together by fate. A must see

5.0 out of 5 stars Indian romeo + juliet, 19 Jul 2003
Excellent debut performances from stars who went on to do many other great films. This classic romeo and juliet story potrays the innocence of the characters very well, and has a cultural perspective. Reccomended to anyone who enjoys love stories, although there's something in this film for everyone to enjoy, inluding all the singing and dancing that most indian films contain.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good rendition of Romeo & Juliet but a little bit dated, 5 Feb 2009
By Lyn "musicolit" (Melbourne Australia) - See all my reviews
his is Romeo and Juliet almost faithfully told from start to end (except no fake poison from colluding monks!)
It was interesting to see Aamir Khan in his first movie (and compare it to his nephew Imran's recent first performance in a movie Aamir enabled - Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na) He did a really good job of the role though of course developed even finer acting skills as he matured. Juhi Chawla is also very good with her usual coquettishness. The make a charming young couple and for their ages did very well.
I didn't find the songs as memorable as some did. Dance really doesn't feature.
It is classic Bollywood and much loved by many but is a little dated around the edges with a fake beard that is noticeable and fight scenes that are a bit primitive and have whip-crack sounds for punches connecting. The film colour also is of its age and is a bit dated looking now. There is as much violence in this as in the Shakespeare version really.
If you like Bollywood and romance you are likely to like this. If you follow Bollywood stars then this stands tall as the one where 2 actors (Aamir and Juhi) that maintained their strength later, started. It is widely highly regarded by Bollywood fans even all these years later...and yes you can see the resemblance between Aamir and his nephew so there's hope for another strong Khan presence in the future.
