Maybe this unit is overkill for what I need it for but for what I do use it for its perfect. I bought this a few weeks ago and within it lives a 3TB, a 4TB and a 1TB drive for all my Movies (1080p MKV's and original ISO's). I also have all my home PC and Laptop documents library pointed to shared folders on the NAS as well as all my work stuff which I access through the MyCloud service and VPN. I'm sure there are million other things it can do but for what I need it for its rock solid, fast and reliable. I have it connected through a gigabit switch into my home network and manage copy to and from speeds of up to 100MB/s consistently from both network locations and drive to drive. Well worth the money! Checkout my review of the WD Mybook Live and you'll see what happens when you go cheap...

I recently owned the TS-210 qnap nas, and it worked quite well with its ARM cpu, but i was running out of storage fast, and yes i prob could of just gone for larger drives, but i wanted expandability and other perks, so after uming and arring!! i plumbped for the TS-469L, it seemed resoanbly priced, i was not interested in an LCD screen( thats what the GUI is for) and didnt need locks on the drive bays( if someone was going to go to the trouble of taking them i would have alot more goods to worry about, ) so didnt want the 469 pro

anyway, if your going for one of these with a full set of drives and using raid 5/6 or 10 i think it is, just be prepaired for a long setup !! its nothing to do with the QNAP aws such, but the way this raid works is it takes about 24-48 hrs!!!!! to synchornise after formating , but it does this for a very good reason, if after this 1 0r 2 srives die on you, it will allow you to replace them with good drives and not loose any data! and after having gone thru the setup. i certainly am feeling all warm and fuzzy aboubt not loosing all my movies etc, ;)

i have since upgraded the memeory which it allows you to do up to max 2GB extra so its now running at 3GB ram, and certainly seems quicker although it was not slow anyway, but for £15 it seem rude not too, given it should help with multi tasks,

setting up the TS 469L was quite easy apart from the stated raidathon! but i have even managed to setup up internet remote access using DDNS so can get my nas to download etc remotely, also setting up email alerts was swift enough,

now the oither thing i need to mention, is it has two gbit ethernet ports, which you can combine and use various settings for, i.

For anyone dithering about whether to choose this or the TS-469 Pro, choose this one. All you lose is the display and lockable drive trays. You save hundreds of pounds and the units are identical. Managing a NAS from a two line display is almost impossible and you will end up using the web and SSH interfaces, so the display is irrelevant.

I bought the TS-469 Pro first and the TS-469L when an Ethernet port failed on the Pro. It took QNAP two months to repair it and they bent one of the locking tabs for the case when they did the repair hence four stars. Also the on line customer support isn't great. Mostly support is provided by other users and some of them are angry geeks who attack anyone who dares to ask a question or who states that their QNAP is less than perfect. Not a good experience.

That said, the unit is well built. It helps if you are an IT geek to get the best out of it. If you are not familiar with Linux, installing packages via the CLI and configuring a NAS then you will miss out. I recommend adding a 2GB SODIMM and creating a RAMDISK for Squid cachefiles. Study web pages for assistance in configuring DNS and DHCP and use your inner geek to add IMAP mail. You then have a powerful low energy server and excellent NAS/SAN. It suits my needs well and has replaced a noisy, power hungry server. It is perfect for SOHO use if you are a competent IT tech or have one in your business. Also good for use with VMWare ESXi (Vsphere) since it supports iSCSI.

I now use the 469L as a media server using DLNA (Twonky) and it's great for this, allowing me to serve video and audio to my networked devices. The only shame is that Apple try to cripple Apple TV to not work with third party devices. It does, however, work well with Humax and Cyrus media streamers.

Got this to replace my buffalo (as buffalo never provided an update to their firmware to support OSx). Its a big investment but i can say its a really good buy you will not regret.

I take a lot of photos and have over 50,000 images in most in nikon raw 12+mb. I use Lightroom 5 and have now moved all my images to the NAS. The performance is outstanding!

The Plex server is good, but there are a number of file formats that don't play on my Samsung F8 series smart tv -that disappointing (the issues with QNAP Plex server as i can play those on an iMAC running Plex Server.) Not sure the HD media player adds any value as it also fails to play most of my formats (but they play off my iMAC Plex server on the same TV)

if you want a NAs thats very very fast at getting files / directory listing displayed on your MAC/PC then look no further.
