I needed to replace my existing NAS as it did not support Mac OS Lion. I needed a NAS with good MAC and Windows support and large capacity for future multimedia growth. I bought the QNAP TS-419P II after reading good reviews of QNAP products and checking compatibility on their website. It came unpopulated and I added 4 x Seagate 2TB disks (SEAGATE 2TB 7.2RPM 3.5 6G/B SATA 64MB BARRACUDA) also bought from Amazon. Installing the disks was very simple - much simpler than I had expected. Setup was very easy using my iMac and connection from our Windows laptops and iPad was equally simple. I have configured the QNAP with RAID 5 and connected it using both ethernet ports. I have been using it now for 4 months and I am delighted: it is very fast - much faster than my old Buffalo Terra Station Pro - and has a very small footprint. The prices for both the QNAP NAS and the Seagate disks were - by my comparisons - also excellent value.

I have been using a low-spec PC as a home server for years, for file backups and also media streaming around the house. I had been perfectly happy with it. Then a disk failed.

Rather than simply replace the disk I decided that it was time to see how well NAS devices had evolved (having tried an early Buffalo Terrastation years ago and found it dreadful).

The QNAP 419PII is superb. The only issue I had was finding disks that were on their compatability chart. Setup was a breeze, requiring minimal imput to their wizard.

I cannot believe how quiet and cool it runs. I keep looking under my desk at the front panel LEDs just to ensure that it is still on :) My study is now so much nicer to work in, without the drone of the previous PC fans and the heat it kicked out.

Only used it as a file server and media streamer (TwonkyMedia), so cannot comment on the other functions it offers.

In summary, absolutely perfect for home use.

Having done a lot of research before buying this NAS, I knew what to expect and it has so far not disappointed.

It's been in full operation now (with four Seagate ST3000DM001 3TB drives in a RAID5 configuration and all updated to the latest firmware) for a week.

The TurboNAS's own firmware update worked flawlessly and was idiot-proof. The configuration wizard to get the box running was perfectly fine for someone with a little network knowledge.

So far the only surprise has been how quiet this box has been. I read reviews complaining that it's loud but in my (clearly, limited) experience, it's far quieter than a D-Link NAS that I used to own. Also, far cooler in temperature terms.

If I discover something particularly excellent or poor, I'll update this review.

I bought this as an all in one media/backup solution and it is more than capable. The only criticism I have is that the management software is not well integrated with some of the major features, simply relying on the gui's provided by the open source tools they are based off. They do all work though, even better after doing a software update, and I am very happy with my purchase.

Bought the QNAP TS-419 12tb TurboNAS to back up my photo archive spread across an array of internal hard drives.

The hardware itself is well made, feels sturdy - nice brushed metal and a reassuring weight. Setup was easy, just flash the device with the latest firmware via a web frontend, and then setup the RAID configuration you want. I went for a RAID 5 config, whereby a single drive can fail and data still be available.

After transferring 400 gigs of photos a worrying mechanical grinding emanated from the TurboNAS. Not the kind of noise that you want from any hard drive. After shutting the device down (it stopped responding via the web admin front end) and restarting it, to the same noise of mechanical grinding - one of the hard drives had "disappeared" and was no longer recognised.

The good news is that yes - the RAID function of the device worked, all my data was still available but I hadn't hoped to be testing it after 3 days worth of usage.

It's worth noting that the 4 x 3tb hard drives shipped with the device are Hitachi HDS723030ALA640. Maybe there's nothing in it, but in 20 years of using WesternDigital & Seagate I've never had a drive die, bad sectors yes, but not a catastrophic drive failure like the above in such a short time.

In terms of storage speed - was disappointed that the TurboNAS topped out at 32mb/s write in RAID 5 config, via Gigabit ethernet. That's based on copying individual images that are roughly 22mb each.

Maybe I'm unlucky, but I think I'd prefer to go for a "branded" paired drive and an empty enclosure if I were to go for another QNAP product. Also poor write speeds makes this a good backup solution, but not the best solution as a "working" drive. Device was RMA'd to Amazon, I guess in some ways was lucky it failed before had invested any more time transferring data to it.

A very powerful NAS with huge capabilities - but as a consequence of this power, it's pretty complex to set it up even to do simple tasks.

Regular updates available and I've not had a single problem with the device - even when it was backup up my content to the cloud for 2 weeks solid, 24/7, in addition to its normal tasks.
