QNAP TS-419p+ Turbo 12 Aug 2011
By Roy
QNAP TS-419p+ Turbo, snappy name.
I'd done a bunch of research on NAS units and the 419p looked like it would work.
Shipping was very speedy and the unit turned up same day as the 4 2tb drives.
Set up was as easy as the instructions indicated but did take longer than I anticipated.
When you switch the unit on, there are _significant_ delays while the system comes to life.
15 - 20 minutes, be aware of that.

Once the unit is up and running, then log onto the unit via your browser to run any admin you need (again, not entirely obvious from the instructions)

The unit is very quiet in operation.
The software front end is very easy to understand.
I'm very pleased with it.
Very very versatile piece of kit.

Having issues with "time machine" (Apple back up app) I believe a "fix" is on the way.

A very nice product 3 Jun 2011
As with all QNAP products the software and build quality are excellent. I just wish it was a little faster, it seems expensive for a product that can only achieve transfer rates of around 30MB/s over gigabit ethernet. Okay I knew the spec before I bought the NAS, but I've used older QNAP products and was always happy with the performance - this one just seems underwhelming and the 459 is way too expensive for a 4-bay NAS. In hindsight if I were buying now I'd buy a Synology DS 1511+, it's a bit more expensive but a lot faster.

***** 19/02/2012 Update

While I was initially disappointed at the transfer speeds, I'm getting more and more impressed at the amount of I/O this little box can handle and have revised my rating to 5 stars. I'm studying for my VMware VCP exam so I'm using it of NFS and iSCSI for a number of ESXi servers. In addition to this it handles time machine backups for 3 Macs and the usual SMB file shares. I wouldn't try streaming video from it at the same time, but that's probably a bit too much to ask anyway. It has been coping very well though and throughout all of this has remained quiet and cool - the disks all have a temperature of around 36C. By comparison I had a Tranquil BBS2 that ran at around 60C - the temperature was the main reason for me ditching this box and getting another QNAP.

Great bit of kit 14 Aug 2011
I used to own a Synology DS207+ but needed (OK wanted!) a few more drive bays. I looked at the prices of the 4 bay Synology devices but compared to the QNAP range there was a massive difference. Took a bit of a punt as I really did like the software on the Synology so wanted something as good as, if not better... I needn't have worried as the QNAP software support is excellent. Very easy to install new apps etc... The front end is also very good.

I haven't done a single benchmark with my kit... but I use 2 x 1tb (in RAID1) drives for documents and photos... and another 2 x 2tb (again in RAID1) drives for media. I've never found it lacking in speed to be honest.

I also use it share my printer across the network. This did cause a bit of a problem with older firmwares as QNAP were changing the printing system around but that's all resolved now.

Not sure what the other review meant by significant (15-20 minutes) delays in powering up, but mine always seems to take under 5 minutes. I guess this could depend on the configuration of your drives and other start up apps etc... (if you're running all the web servers / media streaming etc...)

No issues from my machines (mixture of Windows 7 and Ubuntu) connecting via NFS and Samba. That said I did need to make my username/password the same on my NAS as on my Windows 7 boxes in order to get it to connect to my user share properly.
