Product Description

Introducing the QNAP TS-412 NAS server for home use, an easy to use networked storage center for the ultimate digital home entertainment experience.

Contains the WD Red HDD’s with WD’s NASware technology for improved efficiency, reliability and compatibility

QNAP Turbo NAS servers are a new approach for sharing digital photos, music, and movies/videos, and keeping home computers backed up.

You can easily view photos, listen to music, and even watch Full HD 1080p movies on a widescreen TV or projector streamed from the NAS over the network through PS3, Xbox 360, or other network media players.

You can share multimedia content with family and friends wherever they are on the Internet by web browsers.

iPhone/iPod touch/iPad and Android users can browse shared photos or listen to their music collections anywhere with 3G or Wi-Fi connection by streaming content directly to the device – no sync required.

QNAP NAS brings to life the ultimate in digital home theater enjoyment.

Home Movie / Video Center

QNAP NAS is an ideal video storage center for you to store numerous home videos, movies, and ripped Blu-ray or DVDs. Not only that, you can enjoy Full HD movies on your TV streamed from the NAS through PS3, Xbox 360, and other network media players.

The NAS features high-speed data transfer of exceeding 70MB/s*, fast enough to support multiple 1080p HD streams. The whisper-quiet design brings you the best cinema-grade home theater experience right in your living room.

Complete Backup Server

With QNAP's backup utility NetBak Replicator, you can automatically back up your important files from Windows PC to a QNAP NAS over the network. You can execute real-time synchronization and scheduled backup from multiple PCs to the NAS, and also restore the data to the original location or to a new directory in the event of a PC crash. In addition, QNAP NAS are compatible with many third-party backup software applications including Apple Time Machine.

Exclusive Q-RAID 1 Disk Mirroring

You can connect an external USB or eSATA drive to the NAS and configure it as a “mirror disk” of the internal hard drive of the NAS. The NAS data will be synchronized with the external drive continuously. If the internal hard drive on the NAS fails, you could install the external drive in the NAS to restore the system with all the data retained.

Home File Server

You never have to worry about the PC’s hard drive crashing and data loss, because it is easy for everyone to centrally store, protect, and recover files on the NAS with advanced data protection. You can conveniently share all the photos, music, and movies/videos with your family and friends. Furthermore, different family members can be assigned to access specific share folders for privacy. All the advanced software features are built-in without extra effort and cost.

Home Printer Server

You can connect up to 3 USB printers to the QNAP NAS and share the printers with family members for network (LAN or Internet) printing.

After spending much time researching the various NAS drives available this was the one I settled on.
There are a large amount of configuration options within the NAS, perhaps more than enough for the average technical home user.

I have an atom PC (running windows home server) connected to the NAS drive via a Gb switch which is also connected to 3 x Popcorn hour A210 boxes, which allow the sharing of all my media and even applications through the TVs

This setup allows me to run a SQL server, MySQL server, IIS web server and a PHP web server.

There are plenty of backup options for most scenarios within the NAS. 2 x Gb ethernet ports to provide load balancing and redundancy in the correct environment.

I have 4 x 3Tb HDD in the NAS. They are not in QNAP's compatibility list, and they only cost £120 and have performed perfectly so far.

The seller I also very good and reliable.

If there is anything you would like to know, please comment on this review

An outstanding product.

Mine is a familiar story to Tech support weenies - I relied entirely on a 3TB external USB hard disk to store all my photos from my business as a professional photographer. I did have some stored online, but the majority were sitting on this disk, which was fine until the whole thing suddenly failed without warning. I have lost count of how many people have said, "I could have told you that might happen". After much anger, frustration and embarrassment, I decided to buy one of these NAS units primarily as a secure and reliable backup system for my PC.

I spent weeks and weeks looking really at Synology and Qnap direct competitors, and eventually settled on the TS-412 Turbo NAS as the build quality looked more substantial, and the increased memory was advantageous for some of the tasks I wanted it to do.

I have not been disappointed by it at all. It does assume a certain level of IT know-how, or at least instinct, but you don't need to be a professional, and the instant help service (when they take over your computer to solve problems) was absolutely brilliant. It took a certain amount of fiddling around to get some of the facilities to work, such as the iTunes server and the print server, but I think that's much more down to my capabilities than the NAS's.

So far, I have only put in two Seagate 3TB Barracuda disks, configured with RAID 1, and they work superbly. I will add two more when I can afford them. That's the beauty of the 4-bay system. I decided to buy just 2 disks rather than cheaper, smaller ones as adding disks of different size makes the RAID a bit complex and you can end up having disk space ignored by the NAS. That's the only advantage of the Synology - the Virtual RAID system is very clever.

This is undoubtedly one of the best NAS Server I have ever used. My original NAS was a Quantum SNAP server dating back to late 90's which is still running by the way, then I moved to the Acer Altos EasyStor. They have both outlived their usefulness, now the TS-412 have replaced both of them, and all I can say is that so far so good and it has lived up to my expectations. It is quiet, it's fast in writing and retrieving data. The management is easy, and done via a browser. Security is good, well it is adequate for me as my home network sits behind an additional layer of Firewall provided by Cisco. The LAN connectivity has redundancy, and with a Raid 5 configuration, it is servicing four platforms for me, MAC OS X, Windows Win 7 and Win XP and finally Linux, what more can I ask for. It is good value too, basing my experience with the Quantum Snap and Acer Easystor. But then again they were of a different time and class of servers, and they were good in their time. But now the TS-412 rules the roost. Great job QNAP.

It took a while to set this NAS up but that was mainly down to having to update the firmware on the hard drives that I had selected to use with the NAS - be sure you check the compatibility list for your hard drive selections as there are known issues with certain drives - most notably the green / low power drives which are not recommended for use with this...

Once the drives firmware was all up-to-date, it was a simple job to bolt them into the caddy's and install, power on and away we go. First area that I found a bit lacking was the documentation - the quick start guide is a bit too brief (how to install the disks and power on) and then the rest is up to you - there is a PDF manual on the CD, but who reads those right?

The UI is fairly intuitive - if you have ever set up a Router for your ADSL (via the web interface) you will have no problem.

I have yet to find anything this little box of tricks can't do - it's currently backing up my Macbook pro using time machine, whilst I am dumping my data to it from my PC workstation, and PC laptop. Also running now as a media server - I have yet to try it as an iTunes server but that's next on the list!

Overall I am very impressed - all the services you could want from a NAS and a media server all in one small little package - well worth the money.
