I did a fair bit of reseach before settling on TS-410 as I had a number of requirements I wanted the unit to meet - I'll share them here in the hope of saving others some time.

I've always thought of question "What Do I Want To Do With It?" when buying anything technical. So for this I wanted a robust and safe piece of external storage for archiving photographic and video date along with music files... and to make those files available via an iTunes server and Squeezebox Server. I also wanted the possibility of expansion, something that would last a good few years, would require minimum maintenance, easy to administer and Mac compatible so I could get rid of my old USB backup.

So for each of these:

* Mac compatible sharing - no issues with this atall. You can create a partion for data, control access and give it an appropriate name really quickly.

* Time Machine compatible - straight out the box. Just enable the function, set the amount of space you want to allow, give it some access control and you're done.

* iTunes server - pretty much like the Time Machine setup. One click and some access control and you're done.

* Squeezebox server - having read the wiki pages on this I was quite nervous about whether it would work or not... but I downloaded the QNAP package and, like the other features, It Just Worked.

* RAID level - I went for RAID 1 as it suits what I need. Other RAID levels are available - take the time to work our what it is you want before selecting. The RAID management, recovery and expansion functions work straight out the box.

* Future expansion - See comments on RAID above... but the unit also supports iSCSI and other options which I don't need right now but could well find useful in the future as and when I have the time or the inclination to use them.

* Additional options I might need - as I'm intending on using this for a good while I wanted something which could provide additional functions I 'might need'... and there are many of them here ranging from web-servers, media centres to offline downloads and streaming. All to be saved for a rainy day.

As with all purchases there's a compromise and here's it's processor and memory power versus price. As another reviewer commented, the unit can be slow at some functions as a result of this, but it really depends on whether you want to do a lot of file manipulation on the NAS and rebuild your RAID sets on a regular basis.

I looked at the next model up, but the price put me off. Anything less from QNAP offered only two slots (compromise on expansion) and other brands didn't offer a similar product for less.

If you want something that works out the box, is built to last, has options for expansion - storage and functionality - and you don't want to be messing about with it to maintain or configure... then this is for you.

Hints and Tips

When you first switch on the unit it asks you to perform a Firmware upgrade - don't skip this step.

Have a read of the manual - it's not that long and many of the sections talk about maintenance tasks which you'd only refer to when you're in trouble so can be skipped. I know it's not normal to read manuals but go on - buck the trend.

If you're going to leave the unit switched on all the time you might want to consider spending a bit more on the hard drives as most desktop disks aren't designed for continuous use. The list of compatible drives on the QNAP site is very helpful. I spent a bit more buying 'Enterprise Quality' Western Digital disks as they're not only designed for this but also have a much longer Mean Time Between Failures.

Follow the advice on the Squeezebox wiki - if it works, don't upgrade to another version of Squeezebox Server. The version I have switches the disks off when not in use - a common complaint of earlier versions but the current standard (December 2010) works just fine.

You may find that other components in your network slow down file transfer - check it out to ensure routers and connections are all configured to go at the same speed.

I did a bit of web research before buying a NAS for home use and was attracted by the good reviews of the UI for this product. It does not let you down. Straightforward to set up. So I've far just set up accounts for everyone in the household so that they can access their files and content from any computer/laptop on our home (wifi and powerline) network. "I need to use that computer" family arguments have evaporated, and the data is stored securely.

I've not tried the more advanced features like the media player yet - the manual (which is HUGE) doesn't really explain why you would want to do this rather than just storing content on the drive and playing via the player on the PC itself. As someone who can just about set up a Windows home network, I found the manual aimed slightly above my head.

Very happy with the purchase but feel there is a lot more it can do that I am not aware of. A user guide for dummies would be good.

Buyer Beware 24 Feb 2010
I purcahsed the TS-410 with 4 Seagate 1.5TB Barracuda 7200.11 Hard Disk Drives
(check the QNAP website for compatible hardware before you purchase your drives.)
I have a lot of video files that I wanted to stream to a Popcorn hour, Med500x and a PS3. I also wanted to install SqueezeCenter server (QKPG download) to strream music to a Squeezebox boom.

Installing the Hard drives was a breeze.
The TS-410 has slide out front loading bays however, formating the 4 drives to ext4 and then syncing them in a Raid 5 configuration took over 12 hours!

Running the Squeezecentrer on the TSS-410 was a disater!
It was too complex to install an configure.
Once i'd set it up the TS-410 server constantly disconected within minutes for no reason! Firmware updates didn't resolve the issue so I was forced to uninstall the SSOTS software and purchase a Netgear ReadyNAS Duo RND2000 which has SqueezeCenter pre installed (and works like a charm by the way.)

I transfered just under 1TB of video files to the TS-410 over a gigabit network which was pretty quick (a few hours) averaging 10-12MBs speed per file, placed those videos in a created share folder, set the share rights/access and started to stream to my media devices.
Every couple of days the TS-410 server disconects for no reason forcing me to restart the server apart from this problem streaming video works very well.

Searching for a server disconection solution on the QNAP forums has lead me to believe formatting my hard drives to ext4 causes the server disconection issue.
Many TS-410 owners have reformated their hard drives from ext4 to ext3 and solved the disconection problem.
I wanted to avoid reformating my disks to ext3 (i'd have to back up over 1TB of videos first!) and instead have updated the TS-410 firmware again to TS-410 -3.2.3 Build 0212. that was 2 days ago and so far so good no unexplained server disconetions.. yet.

The TS-410 has dual gigabit ethernet. Unfortunately they don't work independently of each other (which isn't made clear enough by QNAP). The Dual gigabit work together as as a fault/tolerance setup in several configurations.

The large front screen DOES NOT display any text information! Displayed are 4 Green lights [the hard drives], 1 Amber light [network status] 1 flashing Red light [server status].
For all other Server information you have to use the QNAP Finder Software.

Twonky media server also works well but it doesn't transcode files. That option has been greyed out and is unconfigurable in the Twonky media settings.

In conclusion the TS-410 is a very quiet NAS.
The drives are easy to remove and the unit doesn't take up much space.

I can't recommend this NAS because of all the problems i've had with it but I will say QNAP firmware updates are regular and they do seem to try and address highlighted issues across their product range, but at this price (inc hdd) stuff should work out the box as advertised.
If you must buy this product I recommend you visit the QNAP forum first & read the issues before you take the plunge.
