Very flexible, very reliable, great box that continues to delight,
By
This review is from: QNAP TS-212 Turbo NAS 2-bay wih iSCSI and RAID 0/1, Marvell 1.2GHz CPU, 256MB DDRII RAM, built-in UPnP/ DLNA media server (Accessory)
It appears this NAS box is loved or hated on the reviews, I personally love it.I imagine some of the difficulties experienced by other users could be a faulty box, their other equipment, a different firmware version or different needs. But with my set up (iphones, ipad, macbooks, imac, ps3 and windows PCs) I now have a great experience. I now have my NAS set up to do the following things with no issues - Stream all types of media to ipad, iphone, macbook, ps3, Apple TV, Sony Network TV, windows PC - Be my time machine backup for two macbooks - fileshare (copyright free or freeware) files - Set up as RAID 1, so I have two copies of data to reduce risk of data loss I've some bigger drives on order, after which I will migrate over my iPhoto library, and back up my iMac. Good points - Quiet, uses hardly any power, MUCH QUICKER and more likely to stream video than a USB drive connected to a network router - Unlike others, I have managed to stream all media types, I suppose it could also depend what the player user has has been running for six months now with no issues - Huge amount of configuration options - If you want true data security, this NAS box can back up to Cloud, but only Amazon S3 or elephantdrive at time of writing, which are so expensive you may as well buy another NAS box and connect it up in your shed to provide offsite back up. Average points - The is so much this box can do, you really have to look carefully on how to set it up, the instruction manual is hundreds of pages long Things to be aware of - The iTunes Server function will only hold audio, it will not hold or stream video, so if you want to stream video to an Apple TV for example, you either need to jailbreak your apple TV or use a computer running full iTunes - Check very very carefully what drives to put into this NAS. Drives that are approved can also be rubbish, before you buy drives check the QNAP forums where people are very vocal about good and bad experiences. Never buy drives just because they are on the approved list only. All in all great, I've not yet configured the NAS to allow me to access via the internet, nor used it as a web server, but that's possible too. So, it works, is reliable and the full instruction manual is available online before you buy, so you can check it does what you need. The new lower price is good too, I bought mine for £200 and am still happy.

Not recommended as a media server,
This review is from: QNAP TS-212 Turbo NAS 2-bay wih iSCSI and RAID 0/1, Marvell 1.2GHz CPU, 256MB DDRII RAM, built-in UPnP/ DLNA media server (Accessory)
I bought this with the intention of it being my 24/7 media server, as well as a backup. All in all it works well as storage but falls flat as a media server. First of all, it only streams flv (flash) or mpeg4 media. The Nas wil transcode all your files into these formats but initial transcoding takes forever and is not practical if you have a lot of media files. This problem can be alleviated, somewhat, if you transcode the files before hand on your own desktop. The big problem - the deal breaker for me - is that this NAS can only stream files less than 2gig in size, virtually ruling out hd content. This is a known issue which has been reported by numerous QNAP users but hasn't yet been resolved.UPDATE: just to clarify the above points, the 2gig issue relates to the bundled Qnap software and QNAP iPhone/iPad apps. There are workarounds using 3rd party software.
