Well I don't know if I should give this 1 star or 5. So I gave it 3!
I have all Macs at home and a Win 7 laptop, so my simple requirements for a NAS are to be able to use Time Machine to back up an iMac and two MacBooks, hold my Aperture / iPhoto library and iTunes library, as well as some documents. Maybe in the future, a few DVD's or films to stream to my Macs or even the TV ( I don't even know if thats compatible or possible) QNAP says all this is possible, so I bought this unit.
So, how did I get on.
First of all, its very plasticky but it seems its put together well. The hard drive slide comes out easily and you have the choice of 8 silver or 4 black screws to fix the drive in with. It needs 4 for a 3.5" drive, which is what I have.
Then plug it in turn it on, do the initial setup and then sort out what you need. The unit itself is pretty good. The instructions for me though are over complicated and difficult to understand if, like me, you are a home user, buying this single bay home use unit for use in a normal home.
There are so many things it can do and all the software is ready installed, you just have enable, tick, disable etc. As long as you understand the terms they use and what you are actually doing. Plus, you follow instructions to do one thing and nowhere does it tell you you have to do something else as well. Well, it does, but you have to search out the right documents and know all the complicated terms.
One good thing about this is the ability to access it with a smartphone. I downloaded Qmobile from the App store ( iPhone) set it up, didn't work. I found out later I have to enable a couple of other things in the server software first. Then it works.
I tried to set up Time Machine on my iMac? 2 days later after contacting tech support, it might just be working. Time will tell. Its already failed 5 times.....
And, if like me, you want to use it wirelessly, the instructions tell you you have to buy a wireless adapter, which I did, only to find I don't need one because it will connect to my wireless network if I plug it into the wireless router. I suspected it would do this, but nowhere was it mentioned.
And, the instructions are all like that!
I want simple instructions. e.g.. How do I set up such and such? An easy to follow guide with ALL the steps necessary would help. Ok, so all the techy geeks know what to do and can follow poorly written instructions because they have the knowledge. But this is designed for home use, so home user instructions should have been included.

So, now I want to set up my Aperture / iPhoto library. Its not looking good, all I have read so far is that it doesn't work. Time will tell. I haven't the courage to trey yet till I get Time Machine working ( still backing up)
