Ok I'm going to upset at least 50% of the world's audiophile population with this review, so here goes...
Along with every other piece of silver interconnect I've owned this speaker cable's performance is greatly affected by 'burn-in'. And by 'burn in' I mean that the performance will 'improve' after the component has been used for a period of time.
Now how can this be you ask...well in the inimitable words of Vic Reeves "I dunno how...but it does!". Far better qualified people than I have attempted to explain why, still without any real success or proof.
This is now the 4th silver component I've used in my 4 hi-fi systems (they're all connected via a squeezebox network to a FLAC source), and the story has been the same for each component, a Chord Chameleon RCA interconnect, 2 QED Qunex 3 RCA interconnects, and now this QED speaker cable.
Initially the sound quality as shockingly poor, very thin and light, extremely top heavy, and completely lacking in bass. Each time I've had the same disappointed expression on my face, however previous experience has now taught me to leave things running before making my judgement. In this case it was about 40 or so hours before the bass returned, leaving me with a beautifully detailed and balanced sound.
This is not my ears getting used to the sound, as I said earlier I have 4 different hi-fi configurations, each with its own characteristic sound, and all with full and rich bass...eventually. Additionally I even tried listening to the cable whilst it was 'burning in' after a night down the pub, and it was still unpleasant to listen to, even whilst drunk!!!
So that's the reason for only 4 stars, if one does not persist with the 'burn in' one could be very disappointed with one's expensive new 'upgrade'...
