Product Description

Product Description
Surely the most famous ship in the world, Cunard's QE2 has captured the headlines for 40 years as she plies her glamorous trade around the globe. The book takes a warts and all look at this fabulous ship. Starting with her revolutionary design and the arguments surrounding her construction and moving on to her time in service with sometimes troubled voyages undergoing engine failure, stowaways, storms, collisions and wartime derring-do. The story includes hosts of celebrities from the sixties to the present day, all of whom have fallen for the charm of this old-fashioned lady. After more than five million nautical miles and 40 years the wrinkles are beginning to show. But while people with taste and a sense of history want to take the most luxurious and leisurely voyages, she will still have a job to do. And nobody does it better than QE2.

5.0 out of 5 stars QE2 - Forty Years Famous, 3 Feb 2008
By C. Reay (Doncaster, South Yorkshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is a proud tribute to one of the last of the last great liners. For well over 40 years the "Grand Dame" has entertained over 2.5 million passengers, many of them stars of the silver screen and members of royal families, and during her time in service has transported her distinguished guests 5.6 million nautical miles - more than any ship in history.

This book is written by a true QE2 fan and is one of the most factually acurate books to date.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent History of 40 Years of Service, 21 Aug 2008
By Peter Laing - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Thatcher has cut through the spin and corporate hype (and disinformation) to get to the truth behind the multiple myths of the QE2. For example, on how QE2 got her name - Thatcher flat out contradicts the (until recent) Cunard line that 'it was named after the first ship of the same name' - and goes into the full story behind one of the most enduring QE2 myths. So how her work can be described as "written by the Cunard publicity department" beggars belief. In any history covering (nearly) 40 years of service it is perhaps unrealistic to expect a lot to be devoted to her original interiors - that might well be a useful subject for a different book, but not this one. This book stands as a worthy companion to the first, and still one of the best books on QE2 by Potter & Frost. Well worth it.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Disappointment, 9 May 2008
By Clive H. Harvey - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a beautifully produced book and is therefore a lost opportunity. In the build up to the entry into service of the QE2 Cunard announced that "ships had been boring long enough!" There is nothing in this book that shows the reader why the company made such a claim. Whilst there are countless photos of the ship there are almost none of what she was like on board. Her stunningly designed public rooms and cabins (as they appeared in 1969) seem to be totally ignored. Meanwhile the text reads as though it was perhaps written by the Cunard publicity department - maybe it was and Ms Thatcher's name was put on the front in order to 'sell the book.' Undemanding fans of the QE2 will undoubtedly love the book - I was sorely disappointed.

Unlike QE2's service history, my comments will be brief.
This is a stunning book, highly recommended to anyone who wishes to learn more about the ship. Read more
