Key Stage 2 English National Tests is an excellent CD-ROM to use with children who are 10-11 years old and approaching Key Stage 2 SATs. It contains the official QCA tests from 2001, which children can familiarise themselves with and practise answering.
The CD-ROM comprises of the test paper that can be looked at on screen or printed out. It is useful for children to see the layout of the test and the types of questions that are asked. Children must answer a range of questions on an information text. Having answered the questions children or parents can check the answers. There is also a very good help section that explains each question and how it should be approached.
The writing test gives children the choice of writing a report, a play script, a traditional tale or a short story. It is not so easy to check the answers with a piece of writing, but there is a very good outline of what is needed for a Level 3, 4 and 5 piece of writing in terms of purpose and organisation, style and punctuation. Examples are given of pieces of writing at each of the levels and why they were awarded the marks. It is stressed however, that only an official examiner can grade a piece of work, but it does give an idea of what is expected and will help to match a child's piece of work to a level. The spelling test and examples of handwriting are also shown and there are further questions available.
Key Stage 2 English National Tests would be a very good buy for parents of Year Six children who want to help their children prepare for their English SAT. --Amanda York

This QCA CD-ROM contains the ACTUAL 2001 KS2 National Test Papers for English, in printable form for a child to print off and use as they would in the actual Test for practice. The CD ROM includes a parent friendly version of the marking scheme, which explains in non-specialist language when answers do or do not deserve full marks and why.
In additional there is a user-friendly 'Help' section which guides the child if they get stuck on a question or want to see a different approach to a problem.
