Amazon.co.uk Review

Seattle vets Queensryche breach the new millennium with heads held high, their music ever-straddling that uneasy middle ground between 1980s big-hair metal and 90s shaved-head sludge. In other words, they've managed to keep their originality intact. The band's sense of taut drama remains, with "Falling Down" and "Sacred Ground" setting the tone. Melodic (if not overwrought) vocalist Geoff Tate manages to evoke RJ Dio without all the medieval kitsch that comparison implies. "One Life" proves they've learned a trick or two from angst-ridden younger Seattle cousins Alice in Chains and Soundgarden, though not enough to keep them from the occasional lapse, like the bitter-saccharine "When the Rain Comes". But by sticking to their guns, especially in the epic-scaled "Liquid Sky", Queensryche may yet share the same last, ironic laugh that Def Leppard did on Euphoria. --Jerry McCulley

Queensr’che - Q2K 21 May 2012
By Gentlegiantprog TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Q2K was the seventh full-length studio album by the Seattle based Progressive Metal band Queensr’che. Released in 1999, Q2K was the band's first album without lead guitarist Chris DeGarmo and it has long been criticized by fans and critics as being a low point in the bands career.

Queensr’che love evolution, and so as with every album before it, Q2K sees a shift in musical direction. The band no longer write Heavy Metal, Prog-Metal, MTV Commercial Rock, dense Eastern-sounding Prog or jangly, primarily acoustic Alt-Rock material like on any of their previous albums.

The sound of Q2K is still influenced by the Alternative spirit, but in a different way than on this album's 1997 predecessor Hear In The Now Frontier. There is a touch more distorted low guitar and a greater focus on percussion and texture.

In terms of highlights, most Queensr’che fans can agree on the opener `Falling Down' as well as `Liquid Sky' and the single `Breakdown,' which all fall in the spectrum of basic polished Rock, but are three good songs nonetheless.

The two semi-ballads `Right Side Of My Mind' and `When The Rain Comes' also both pick up quite a few compliments too, so that's five out of the album's eleven tracks that a lot of people seem to enjoy. If the entire album was as good as the highlights, and there was a little diversity in place too, then this would be a pretty great album.

Some of the songs aren't as good as those highlights though. The rest are OK, but don't really work well when played together. The problem with the album overall is that it all sounds the same more or less, so once you've heard a few tracks nothing can really surprise you all that much.

There are no instrumentals, no real fast songs, no really slow songs, no fully acoustic tracks, no spacey synth-driven tracks, no dynamic ten-minute tracks and not even any quick one-and-a-half minute interludes that deliver a message and then disappear. Rather, almost every song is mid-tempo, mid-heaviness, mid-length and so ultimately just end up provoking only mid-level excitement.

In addition; there aren't any samples, there aren't all that many guitar solos and there aren't many additional instruments such as saxophones to mix things up now and again, so even within each song itself, there isn't a lot of variety.

Still, even with those flaws, its not as if anything is actually bad. If you take any one song out of context, it won't actually be bad (and may even be pretty good as in the case of the five aforementioned highlights), and of course Geoff's vocals are still great the whole way through. Its just unfortunate that for some reason when they're all sat together in one big row the album can just feel a little too grey, mushy and bland.

I feel that people are wrong just to reject the album out of hand because Chris DeGarmo isn't playing guitar and people are similarly wrong to reject the album out of hand just because it isn't very Metal sounding or Progressive in nature. That being said, the album does suffer from the aforementioned lack of variety and energy and so it takes a fair bit of patience to really enjoy. It isn't as if Q2K is some massively underrated gem, its just that its not as bad as people make it out to be.

Buy it if you have an open mind and want a few more Queensr’che songs to listen to, but don't bother if you only wanted something that sounds like the old days or pushes a lot of boundaries.

By David Calcano VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
When the guitar player Chris DeGarmo left the band, I was extremely skeptic about new records or even the band's future, his style and contributions was an intricate part of their sound; equally Geoff's voice defined Queensryche too. The band was recovering from this earthquake after losing a massive pillar, plus, EMI and their management left them.

I believe all this stress and mixed feelings are reflected in this record's songs in a positive way. Long introduction, but this record is REALLY REALLY good, it keeps the band's power and style, doesn't divert entirely, one can't stop missing Chris DeGarmo's melodies; but this records holds it together pretty well, changing my perspective to continue following this band because of their great music and wonderful Tate's vocals.

About the additional EXPANDED EDITION ADDITIONAL TRACKS: Is it worth upgrading? The unissued tracks are good, especially "Until there was you" which is a fine power ballad, just don't expect something like Silent Lucidity, it is a much simpler song; still great to listen to. The live version of Sacred Ground didn't do it for me I'm afraid, the studio version has so much groove on it that the live version didn't offer that I didn't enjoy it as much.

I can't speak about the remastered sound because I did not have the previous edition, but the additional songs are worth the price considering the cost of this record now (£5).

Let the music play!

Queensryche were in turmoil following the departure of DeGarmo, the erstwhile lead guitarist. The rift in the band is already evident in the sluggish meandering predecessor `Hear In The Now Frontier', which was a big disappointment when it was released. As the sleeve notes on this cd make clear, the remaining band members had to find a new way of writing, a new style almost. The result appears to be a real collective effort, without any one influence from the band making more of an impact than another. The drums drive the whole - they are simply massive in the mix. And from that perspective it is quite a percussive straight ahead sounding, loud, record. Lets be clear - Empire it is not. Mindcrime it is not. And as a Queensryche release of its day it might be viewed as a bit of a disappointment. However, time is a great healer and time has been very kind to this record (unlike `HITNF). It is a lot more personal and honest than the earlier Queensryche material (not a criticism of the earlier masterpieces, it's just different) - it's grittier and seems to get closer to the band in both song content and delivery. Interestingly enough the bonus tracks are blinding omissions from the main record - they flow naturally from the main cd and can be listened to as part of the whole (a fact not lost on Geoff in the liner notes). As with Live's 'V', this is the sound of a band getting honest and simply rocking out - I love this record for that.
