Product Description

In all of his travels Captain Jean-Luc Picard has never faced an opponent more powerful that Q, a being from another continuum that Picard encountered on his very first mission as Captain of the Starship Enterprise(t). In the years since, Q has returned again and again to harass Picard and his crew. Sometimes dangerous, sometimes merely obnoxious, Q has always been mysterious and seemingly all-powerful. But this time, when Q appears, he comes to Picard for help. Apparently another member of the Q continuum has tapped into an awesome power source that makes this being more powerful than the combined might of the entire Q continuum. This renegade Q is named Trelane -- also known as the Squire of Gothos, who Captain Kirk and his crew first encountered over one hundred years ago. Q explains that, armed with this incredible power, Trelane has become unspeakably dangerous. Now Picard must get involved in an awesome struggle between super beings. And this time the stakes are not just Picard's ship, or the galaxy, or even the universe -- this time the stakes are all of creation...

Peter David adds another unmissable read to his list of Star Trek greats. Once you pick it up, you truely will never put it down - I have re-read this one on several occasions.

The novel revolves around three alternate universes - 1)The 'normal' Star Trek universe that we see each week on our TV screens, 2)A universe in which Jack Crusher is alive, and Captain of the Enterprise with Picard as his First Officer, and 3)The alternate universe created in the episode 'Yesterday's Enterprise'. At the center of these three universes is of course the loveably omnipotant entity Q, embarking on a quest to prevent his 'Godson' (for want of a better word) Trelane (from TOS) wreaking eternal havoc on all dimensions of existance.

The thing that makes the book so appealing is the way in which the alternate universes are interwoven into an exciting, unpredictable climax. It is also satisfying to see how David 'works in' little details from actual past episodes of Star Trek - details which within the episode seem insignificant, and yet within the context of this novel become interwoven into a grand tapestry of the Star Trek Universe.

A definate must-read that appeals to all ages.

Superb reading! 27 July 2000
Format:Paperback
To keep it short: Tremendous story and excellent writing of the author! (I read the german translation - but if the original is only half as good as the translation it must be the same breathtaking book! (but normally the original is better)) I read it in one whole night - 'cause I could not stop it! Read it and dare say otherwise! There should be 6 stars above!
