5.0 out of 5 stars genius low budget movie making, 23 April 2006
ok, so you have Caine from Kung Fu and Shaft as a couple of cops-which is very cool- but the dude who steals the film, from them and from the titular giant wing'ed flying beast, is Michael Moriarty as a scat-singing nervy ex-junkie and very smalltime thief, Jimmy Quinn, who attempts to turn the discovery of the monster's lair at the top of the Chrysler Building to his own advantage... Moriarity's super intense performance raises this film to another level and, I swear, Kevin Spacey must've been making notes from this before he turned in his performance as Verbal Kint in The Usual Suspects

The effects aren't great but I actually dug them to the wall-to-wall (and equally obvious) CGI guff most movies are chockful of nowadays

It's also worth bearing in mind this movie is deliberately comic... albeit of a rather nasty tone

Larry Cohen, the writer/director, has carved out a significant body of 'must see' low budget movies (Black Caeser; Hell Up In Harlem; The Stuff; the It's Alive and Maniac Cop movies, to name but a few) and Q, The Winged Serpent is no exception

wildly entertaining and not a little nuts

4.0 out of 5 stars B Movie heaven, 4 May 2007

I saw this at the cinema in 1982 and enjoyed it then. Now I get the DVD to see it again after 25 years and its still good. The script is pretty good, witty and OK occasionally a bit clunky.

The cast are excellent. Carradine is cool, Richard Roundtree is believeable and best of all Michael Moriarty is nuts! You wouldn't believe this was the same actor who co-starred in Eastwoods 'Pale Rider' four years later. In that film he was a dignified decent man, here he is an odious small time time crook who accidently discovers the beast of the title. Its a brilliant performance that raises the film to a higher level.

Larry Cohen the director and writer makes full use of New Yorks dramatic buildings with some great ariel photography. Q itself now looks completely unrealistic as the special effects available for a low budget movie in 1982 were very limited. It really doesn't matter though.

My only criticism is the quality of transfer on the DVD. Its not bad, but its not great either. Probably its the best available but I suspect they could have done better with a digital remaster.

However with the extras, which include a commentary from the director and some interesting DVD-ROM material this is a fine release.

5.0 out of 5 stars Majestic monster madness, 25 Oct 2008
By Mr. Jonathon T. Beckett "vampire lover" (Dracula's Crypt) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
People are starting to lose their heads in New York. Literally. Dectective Shepherd(David Carradine) not has only that to content with but the discovery of a freshly skinned corpse in a bedroom. There are also sightings of a huge creature flying through the sky. Meanwhile, small time career criminal Jimmy Quinn(Michael Moriaery is bullied into being a getaway driver in a diamond heist. When the robbery goes wrong, Quinn flees the scene of the crime, and ends up discovering a half eaten corpse and a huge egg in the roof of the building he's hiding in. What strange creature is terrorising the population of New York and can anybody stop it from killing again?
This is a wonderful film. First of all the title creature looks great, swooping down to attack its victims. Director Cohen makes great use of the High Rise buildings of New York, just like he did in God Told Me To.
The cast are all excellent. Carradine is great as the policeman who delves into Aztec mythology to find answers to the baffling case. Richard Roundtree is also good as the straight laced cop Seargent Powell.
However this film belongs to Moriarty's barnstorming turn as the anti-hero Quinn. He's a constantly moving bag of nerves, and the scenes when he finally finds himself in a powerful situation, holding all the aces, are skillfully handled.
The late 70's and early 80's were a fertile ground for a new breed of monster movie. We got Alligator, Pirahna and Jaws-classics all. This film belongs right up there next to them. 5 OUT OF 5
