Ralph Richardson is the charmingly eccentric major Hammond of Scotland Yard, who is called in to investigage the mysterious disapearance of new British planes on their test flights. He joins forces with dashing, glamorous pilot Tony McVane (stunningly gorgeous Laurence Olivier)to investigate the matter. They are helped and hindered by Hammond's younger sister, spirited and inquisitive newspaper reporter Kay (Valerie Hobson). Eventually McVane takes a test flight himself, determined to get at the truth. All three of the main characters give wonderful performances, especially Ralph Richardson as Hammond, never without his umbrella (his character, according to Leslie Halliwell, was the inspiration for Steed in The Avengers), and the plot, though far-fetched is exciting and enjoyable enough to carry you along to the end. First-rate entertainment.

1939 was a good year for movies. It was at the end of this year that England declared war on Germany so no one could have predicted the outcome. You can get a feel for the time and events by watching Mrs. Miniver (1942). Laurence Olivier is the head pilot for an aeroplane test firm. Planes are missing from the test of a new turbocharger. The use of Marconi's ray in the movie have shades of EMP (electromagnetic pulse) and looks like a particle beam generator that we are perfecting today for our anti ballistic missile defenses system.
Aside from being a great spy movie there is a love interest (Valerie Hobson) that does not overwhelm the story. And we see the mysterious workings of the intelligence service (Ralph Richardson).

This is a aparkling, well-paced and deftly comic thriller. The plot is tight and suspenseful, the characters are charming, and the interplay between the main characters is perfect. The romantic sub-plot is just as enjoyable as the engrossing main plot because of the sharp witticisms and love/hate friction between the leads. This film is packed with really amusing moments and memorable lines. It begs to be watched again and again! I discovered it pretty much by chance, but it's one to treasure.
