Format:DVD
I read that the plot for the film was quite different compared to that of the novel, so I didn't have high expectations.

In my opinion, the novel itself lacked moral questioning and debate with regards to the protagonist's actions. The film is even worse, with the only food for thought being the random outbursts of indignation from several characters, though the contradictory actions of the female Arsonist Officer remains true to the original story and gives some character to the film.
I found it very disappointing however that the scriptwriters felt the need to make Junko less "immoral" to suit the approval of the mainstream audience, this I felt was a cop out. Also, the actress who plays her is very different to how I think most people would imagine her to be like.
The novel describes a beautiful girl, 25 years of age who doesn't really look after herself properly. The Junko in the film is noticeably older and looks like a typical sweet main character. Maybe it's just me, but I also thought her acting was poor in comparison to the other members of the cast.
One good aspect of the film was the merging of the the Kaori storyline in with the main one. The pointless suspicion and investigation procedure is completely removed.

Being a relatively old film, the camera work is shoddy, with cheesy zooming into shocked faces and the like. The look and pacing of the film is awkward and clunky, with no tension being built up before the big action scenes. It's almost like the director had expected the viewers to read the novel beforehand to get the gist of what would happen.

Overall, this film is worth watching whether or not you have read the novel but much better off if you haven't. Also good for lovers of the vigilante or supernatural genre.

Pyrokinesis 12 Oct 2007
Format:DVD
I had read Miyuki Miyabe's original "Crossfire" novel before I knew this film even existed, so I came to it with a preconceived idea of how the characters should look and behave.
For the most part they are pretty much as Ms Miyabe wrote them, although Junko in the movie is actually less lethal than in the novel, and not 100% as I imagined her. She looks a little older.
The female detective is EXACTLY as I saw her, and is probably the closest of the characters to her written alter ego.

The film itself is slightly different from the novel, and rearranges certain events for pacing, which is okay. The ending is entirely different, but with the same result.
Music is okay, but nothing to write home about.
Acting and direction are great...and the pyrotechnics? Excellent!

A lot of reviewers don't like this film. I think it may be because they want gore and the like. The best Japanese horror don't need it.

I rate this 9 out of 10. A brilliant film, but not as good as the novel.

Pleasantly surprised 18 Oct 2003
Format:DVD
I watched this last night and was pleasantly surprised. If you can imagine a cross between Firestarter,Carrie and Deathwish, you have pretty much got it.

The characters are well done and the acting is pretty good too, rounding the story off well, making it almost believeable to an extent. The effects may not be to everyones taste, but I think they did the job lets face it, couldnt be worse than firestarter!!! It may not be that gory or anything but the film held me for the whole feature.

Eastern horror films seem to be taking over as a force to be reckoned with, what with the original Ring films, Audience etc.

I would recommend this to anyone who wants an alternative to Carrie 2 and the rest of that ilk.
