I got this spray for travelling through Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand. Worked excellently, but be warned it's so strong it melted the nail polish on my toes! If applied thoroughly on exposed skin, you'll fend off the mozzies no problem. One bottle lasted me around 3-4 weeks when used constantly. A very good investment for anyone travelling to malaria zones. At £6.99 here on amazon it's the cheapest I could find of this brand!

I took this with me to Thailand last year, and was very glad I did - but not for the obvious reason.

Firstly, it is very, very strong. People within 20 meters of me were struggling to breath.
But that didn't stop me getting bitten. In fact I was bitten several times every night. I worked out this was because I wasn't properly rubbing it onto my skin. It's quite thick, so you have to be pretty vigourous when applying it - which can be a problem if you're a bit sunburnt.
Basically, I'd recommend getting something weaker and less pungent that you can put on before going out, and an aerosol that you can use to spray a whole room at night.

But, I have to give this 5 stars because this stuff really came in handy one night.
I was staying in a (very basic) beach hut. My mosquito net was treated with permethrin, and I took a bottle of permethrin and sprayed the bed as well.
On the second night, I was woken up by a very strange feeling - my back and neck were incredibly itchy, and every now and then there was a sharp pain - like being jabbed with a pin.
I grabbed my torch, and when I turned it on, found that my bed was covered in ants. Really small black ants.

They were all over my mosquito net, they were in my bed, my hair, my underwear...everywhere. And they were biting me!
So basically I freaked out. I leapt out of bed, and danced around in a circle slapping myslef to try and kill the little critters. This went on for about 10 minutes.
Then, when I was satisfied there were no ants left on me, I chain smoked a few cigarettes, calmed down a bit and had a closer look at my bed. The ants were using my mosquito net like a big climbing frame, and they were small enough to crawl through the net, and down onto the bed.

I purchased Pyramid Repel 100 through Amazon for a business trip I am making in Sierra Leone, West Africa. I have been visiting rural areas during the height of the rainy season and malaria is both massively endemic both there as well as the capital, Freetown. The malarial parasites (plasmodium spp.) are notoriously resistant to most prophylactics - so, a strong repellent is a major front line defense if you are exposed to mosquitoes.

Long and short, I discovered this morning, after several days of applying Repel 100, which contains 100% DEET ( N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide) that it blistered & melted through my new laptop keyboard pad where I rest my wrist when typing. I took precautions not to spray it anywhere near plastics, and used the computer over an hour after applying it to the exposed parts of my arms, even cleaning my wrists before using the laptop. But, the DEET was so strong that it just melted through the covering on my new Dell!

So, I learned a very expensive lesson. My word of caution is that this stuff is VERY strong! It is an excellent repellent, but, do not wear a watch (metal or plastic), keep it away from plastic/synthetic eye wear (most especially lenses and frames for spectacles, swimming or other goggles) and keep it away from all plastics - and, if you are going to use a computer or similar (including handling your mobile phone) wash your hands, or any parts of your body you have applied it to, THOROUGHLY to clean it off before touching or handling any plastics, rubber, etc.

There are many reviews on here expressing the repelling effectiveness of REPEL100 and REPEL 55, so I thought I'd include a little extra information on top of this that might be of use for other common questions. I've used variants in both Africa (Botswana) and South America (Costa Rica).

Is it sticky, smelly, does it sting and will it destroy my clothes?
Consistency is similar to a light oil which means it doesnt feel like it simply evaporates away. This is good in the respect it feels like it's there, doing something, but can feel a little uncomfortable. It has a similar smell to standard repellent if you've used that - people have described it as citrus-like which is probably as close as you'll get. It didnt bother me in the slightest. This is powerful stuff and it will sting on cuts and sunburn, but not enough to outweigh the repelling properties. In terms of harm to clothes, the repellent (or the combo of it and sun cream and sweat) left a notable mark on white clothing. Upon return and after a few washes, I couldnt see any staining, but it's not something I would risk on clothes I cared about.

Can you use it with sun cream?
Yes! Given the potency I was worried it might dissolve or affect the effectiveness of some of the sun cream (I did sun cream first, then repellent). As I'm pretty fair skinned I was factor 30 all the way. I used both a lot, didnt get burned and was out in the sun a lot.

Is there any difference between 55 and 100 variants?
In terms of repellent effectiveness I didnt find any major difference between the two. 100 does feel a little less comfortable than 55, but not by any huge margin. In the end I just figured that if repellent was being used for safety (anti-malaria) rather than comfort (not getting bitten), just go the whole hog and use the 100. I'm not sure any determined insects would be comfortable with the 55 but put off by the 100, but you never know.

Hope this has helped. Happy travels!
