This really is a gem of a show. Music, lyrics, and cast are all excellent, and everybody performs beautifully together (and on their own), and they compliment each other very very well. Their timing is lovely, and their interpretations of the songs are a treat. It is a nicely simple (but cleverly thought out) production - satisfying and uplifting. It's poignant, funny, knowing, alive, and always attractive. And the stage, back-drop design, and musical arrangements are all top-notch. The setting is that you are in on, so to speak, an evening of a small cocktail party, the style of which adds to the appeal and feel of the whole. The inclusion of reach-down drinks cabinet at the back of the stage, that the cast drift over to periodically at appropriate moments is a nice touch, and the smart use of rising and falling cubes mid-stage is another one. If you are looking for something of this kind: a small, close-up review in a wonderful little theatre in New York, sharing with an appreciative audience, and which you can view with great pleasure over and again, then this could be just the sort of thing you seek, sparkling in front of you.

Anyone who likes Sondheim's music and marvellous lyrics cannot fail but to enjoy this live peformance by some of the most talented actors on Broadway. The songs range from familiar to lesser known ones - some funny, some sad but all carried out to perfection by the five actors; Carol Burnett, George Hearn, Ruthie Henshall (brilliant dancer as well as singer), John Barrowman and Bronson Pinchot. Well recorded so that all the words are audible and well staged. This DVD is a real pleasure to watch.

I knew when I'd purchaced it that there was the chance it wouldn't play on many DVD players in this country and on that note I wouldn't recommend buying a Region 1 DVD as you may be wasting your money.

A very good Sondheim review.I'm sure allSondheim fans will like it.I didn't give it top marks as there were (just ) a couple of songs that I wasn't so sure of.
