Book Description

1 Nov 2001

Imagine how Jacques feels when he learns that his older brothers have inherited the mill and the donkey, and all he's got is the CAT!

Well, he's not fed up for long, because he soon discovers that Puss is no ordinary cat... Not only can he talk (which is pretty unusual for a cat), but he's also got brains. And he's got a plan - a plan that involves Jacques, a Royal Princess and a very large fortune!

However, there are some things that Puss hasn't included in his plan, such as a very hungry Ogre, some sleepless Ghouls and more than a touch of magic . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars A lively, dramatic version 13 April 2010
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Philip Pulman's version of the traditional tale is very enjoyable for young children and the adults reading with them. It's a kind of pantomime, with extra characters & situations - not only the wicked ogre but also a princess, ghouls & dungeons. This story can always start a lively discussion about fair play and who deserved what. The extra characters & situations which aren't included in simpler versions of the story make it more interesting & provoke responses from children - it makes them think, & they are likely to get involved.

The illustrations have interesting details, lots of humour & speech occasional bubbles encourage the readers to take part.
