Product Description

The UK's favourite multi-talented jazz man, vocalist, pianist and songwriter, Jamie Cullum, returns with his latest album The Pursuit. This album contains tracks spanning across the pop, hip hop and jazz genres, including the lead single "I'm All Over It", an outstanding take on Rihanna's "Don't Stop The Music" and the spectacular ballad "Love Ain't Gonna Let You Down" as well as many more. The special edition version of The Pursuit includes a bonus DVD with exclusive live and behind-the-scenes footage.

Now officially anointed as the new Dudley Moore, being a talented British pianist about to wed a much taller blonde, Jamie Cullum returns after a four year break with The Pursuit, his fifth and best album yet. A gleeful and deft big band version of Cole Porter’s classic "Just One Of Those Things" kicks off proceedings with a new Cullum-composed introduction, an indicator of his current confidence. And on this evidence it’s warranted. First single, the soft-rocking "I’m All Over It" deserved greater success, while the jaunty "Wheels", inspired by the credit crunch, neatly encapsulates the varied moods of The Pursuit. A funereal reading of "If I Ruled the World" owing far more to Elvis Costello than Harry Secombe, is followed by "You and Me Are Gone", a tribute to Louis Prima’s turn on the soundtrack of The Jungle Book that’s as much fun as its inspriation. A cover of Rihanna’s hit "Please Don’t Stop The Music" is as vulnerable and full of longing as the original even as he makes it his own, yet "Mixtape", a tribute to the varied music Cullum loves, is an upbeat, even extravagant pop song not miles from Ben Folds. "We Run Things" is slighter--Cullum can’t really do threat--but the concluding "Music Is Through", effectively a house tune anchored by his brother’s stand-up bass, neatly combines several genres to great effect. The playing is great throughout, the songs well chosen and arranged, the result entirely satisfying. If marrying pop and jazz without contrivance was the target, then The Pursuit has succeeded perfectly.--Steve Jelbert

After three, almost four, years since the release of "Chasing Tales,"I was beginning to suspect that there might be "reasons" why "The Pursuit" wasn't being released. Finally, it arrived, and since patience is not one of my virtues, I order this "Special Edition" from Amazon.co.uk because the State's release wouldn't come until March 2010.

My suspicions were unfounded, as "The Pursuit" is one top-notched undertaking that gives us some of that traditional Jamie with "Just One of Those Things," coupled with some lively toe-tapping, foot-stomping tunes ("You and Me Are Gone," "Mixtape" and "Music is Through,") some thought-provoking soulful tunes ("If I rules the World," "I think I Love," "Love Ain't Gonna Let You Down" and "Grace is Gone"). Then, there are those that bridge two or more genres, light..fun..happy ("I'm all over it," "Don't Stop the Music," "We Run Things"). Then, there's the Oscar-nominated "Gran Torino" and "Not While I"m Around" that bridges to a new place that Jamie has hinted at visiting in the past, and this shows he arrived.

While I am somewhat of an Anglophile, but sort of out-of-touch since the BBC World Service dropped their entertainment programs several years ago, I am grateful that my step-daughter introduced to me Jamie Cullum's music in 2005. During 2006 we were fortunate to hear him in the States at three different venues (Phoenix, Nashville and Birmingham (AL)), and he delivered performances that were a tour de force, which left us always in awe. For whether the performance cost us $15.00 or $85.00, each time we received a 2-hour 25-minute performance that was a music delight. With Mr. Cullum showing off a true entertainer's chops at each performance.

I have been lucky enough to listen to 6 tracks from this new album and all I can say it WOW. This is a more mature Jamie, with a mix of different sounds that I think most will be surprised at. However Jamie has still managed to keep a part of the old Jamie in there too.

From "Just One Of Those Things" a real Jazz standard to "Wheels", "Mixtape" this album will take you on a real journey.

Whether you like the old Jazz standards or more of the pop music, this album has something for everyone and is a must have.

I've already pre ordered my copy, have you??

As an American who is a huge Jamie fan I was really disappointed to find out the album is not being released in the States until Spring. No way I could wait until then so I promptly ordered it from AmazonUK. I am so glad I didn't wait because it is fantastic! Jamie continues to grow as an artist with each album. His original work and reinvention of old favorites are a breathe of fresh air in a world where so there are so many cookie cutter artists. The DVD extra is a great way to hear in Jamie's words his inspiration behind each song and the live performances are the best! As someone who has seen Jamie perform live, there isn't anyone else like him. I can't wait to see what Jamie does in the future and I am hoping he has a long career.

Jamie has a way with music. Whether he is doing a cover or an original, his voice and style makes the song amazing. Mixtape is probably my favorite track on this CD. It brings memories of when I used to make mix tapes and give them out to my friends. His cover of Not While I'm Around is amazing. It is almost a lullaby being sung to a child. The most interesting one is probably I Think, I Love. It has modern lyrics but sounds like an old standard. All the other tracks are worth a listen. All in all it was worth it to import this CD to the US before the US release date. Buy it. Enjoy it.

Jamie has never been strictly jazz; rather, the styles have ranged from pop to rock to hip-hop to house. However, jazz always seems to be at the core of each work he produces.

This album is no exception. Jamie has produced a brilliant mix of covers and originals, especially, "Just One Of The Those Things", "All Over It Now", "Don't Stop The Music" and "We Run Things". No song on this CD is weak. The album flows together incredibly and is a joy to listen to. I definitely recommend it.
