Product Description

Product Description

An attack on ISO 9000. John Seddon argues that the ISO standards are not delivering the improved quality they promise, and that in most cases they are actually damaging the companies that have implemented them. Seddon argues that the command-and-control ethos that pervades the ISO way of thinking is precisely what most companies do not need. In its place, Seddon shows how real quality can be achieved in businesses today by viewing the organization as a system and focusing on continuous improvement as the best means to create higher quality products and services. With numerous case studies and examples from actual companies, this book should help managers take a new look at the critical question of how to develop a quality organization.

4.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat dated, but still insightful, 14 Aug 2010
This review is from: In Pursuit of Quality: Case Against ISO 9000 (Hardcover)
Seddon's argument against ISO 9000 is not so much about ISO 9000 itself as the standards approach towards quality in general. As an alternative approach, Seddon recommends the Deming philosophy and Lean Management. Of course, there is now a growing body of literature on how to integrate ISO 9000 and Lean, but what is recommended is to use Lean for gradually implementing ISO 9000, NOT the other way around. Seddon's rage against ISO 9000 is perhaps not too smart, and certainly not fitting with the ideas and intentions of ISO 9000, he still has a point about how ISO 9000 is often implemented in practice.

3.0 out of 5 stars Seddon's ISO 9000 perspective, 1 Dec 2009
By Patricia A. Leahy - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: In Pursuit of Quality: Case Against ISO 9000 (Hardcover)
Seddon's book gives credible anecdotal evidence that the standard has much need for improvement. I found the lack of citings and the sparse bibliography to be the downside of this book.
