Review

The only book about knitting you'll ever need. Gorgeous and essential (India Knight)

A witty guide to knitting that includes a history of the craft, instructions on how to begin, how to correct mistakes without unravelling the whole garment and how to execute a range of decorative stitches, including cabling. A range of patterns, including a cool beanie, an iPod cover and an adorable floppy-eared dog, mean that if you start now, everyone can have knitted Christmas presents next year (Daily Mail)

All the knitty gritty tips, info and know-how you'll need to get hooked and stay hooked (Company)

Excellent ... The first Penguin knitting book since James Norbury's classic ... [Purls of Wisdom] strikes just the right tone: fresh, friendly and relaxed, technically useful, with plenty of patterns and inspiration. It's not an easy thing to pull off, but Jenny has done it (Jane Brocket)

Appealing. Not only does it contain very easy to follow instructions for complete novices, it also includes patterns for several very simple but lovely gifts, including a laptop case, baby booties, and a cafetiere cosy (Irish Times)

If you are learning or re-learning to knit this winter, 'Purls of Wisdom' is the book for you ... Instructions and illustrations are clear, the projects charming, the styling cool, the graphics subtle, and even the paper has a lovely smell (Prick Your Finger)

Beautifully styled with lots of useful information - it's almost like going along to a knitting group and gleaning the experience of a more accomplished knitting friend ... [Jenny Lord] has captured the spirit of the recent resurgence in knitting ... and included some beautiful patterns that I'd actually want to knit (Skein Queen)

Brush up on your skills with Purls of Wisdom to get all the, er, knitty gritty tips, info and know-how you'll need to get hooked and stay hooked. (Jazz Domino Holly "Jazz Loves..." Company)

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly reccommended 4 Oct 2010
By Cleo
Format:Paperback
This is a fabulous book as a gift or for making them! Most importantly (for me) the patterns are up to date and fashion forward, not something you often find in a knitting manual! The illustrations and instructions are clear and easy to follow, so great for the beginner, and with challenges for the more experienced knitter. The author is witty as well as informative, making it a fun read. I highly recommend it, especially if the purse strings are tight this Christmas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend this book! 4 Oct 2010
Format:Paperback
I have really tried to be a 'knitter' for many years now, and up until recently have only managed a scarf that i dipped in and out of for 3 years without even finding out how to cast off!
But after reading Purls of Wisdom, I was inspired to try lots of different things (and actually finish them!) - this is because the book has really easy and clear instructions and has patterns for things I find fun to make (i-pod covers, arm warmers etc...) Also I think the more confidence I get the better i'll feel about tackling some of the harder patterns too.

I really recommend it to anyone needing a bit of confidence with the knitting needles!! This is all you'll ever need!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great practical book and also a good read. 4 Oct 2010
Format:Paperback
I always wanted to give knitting a go, and a friend of mine recommended Purls of Wisdom to me.
The patterns are easy to follow, even for someone like me who had never done this before. With great, clear (and beautiful) illustrations. And my friend, who is a more experienced knitter said she also found the patterns fun and useful, and still challenging enough to be of interest to her.

I am amazed that I managed to make some beautiful things from having no previous experience. I think this is the perfect book to get started, as it has great (contemporary) ideas for things that are easy to make but also very special. Not just scarves: plenty of ideas for gifts. I loved the bangles (my mom loved the one I made for her) and the laptop case, and hope to soon get quick enough to brave the blanket.

It also has a great introduction with nice historical anecdotes, so that one can contextualize this traditional craft, learn a bit about its history, and try to understand why we still do it, in a light an fun way.

Pearls of Wisdom has made me want to knit more and more. A great practical book that will get you started and keep you going.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential for the would be knitter 6 Oct 2010
Format:Paperback
This is honestly the only book you'll ever need for knitting.

It's clear, beautiful to look at with lovely artwork and contains patterns you actually want to use as opposed to loads of filler projects or worse still, patterns that require a million different balls of yarn that you know you're never likely to afford to buy for, or bother to complete!

It starts with a really interesting history of knitting and progresses through from choosing your needles and yarn to casting on, basic stitches and beyond.

The author has an incredibly ability to make you believe that you have the power to knit, totally debunking the mythology that knitting is only for grannies who've knitted their whole life or the incredibly skilled artiste.

I would recommend this to anyone, a great knitting bible or a lovely present for a friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely book, excellent results 6 Oct 2010
Format:Paperback
A really lovely book which is fun to read as well as being super informative. It's so refreshing to see a knitting book full of things that I actually want to make, and wear myself - and grudgingly give away as gifts! I've seen some really beautiful results from the patterns in the book - the difficult bit isn't making the pieces but parting with them afterwards! 'Purls of Wisdom' is going to do my Christmas budget no end of good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yum scrum... 4 Oct 2010
Format:Paperback
Beautifully designed, with lovely patterns and really interesting projects - this is SUCH a great introduction to knitting. Perfect for (cack-handed!) amateurs like me, and I reckon imaginative enough for old pros as well. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for beginners and improvers 27 Mar 2011
By V3285
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I recently took knitting lessons and left feeling a little disheartened at the poor teaching and not feeling like I'd got my moneys worth.

I bought this book as it was recommended on the course, and I couldn't wait to receive it. I judge a book by its cover (sorry!) and this cover is so very pretty.

This book is packed full of tips, how-tos, and projects with a range of difficulty levels.

I find it very easy to follow the instructions for each project and so far I've made the iphone cover and the moss stitch tie.

If you are new to knitting this is definitely the book for you! Easy to follow diagrams and instructions go over the basics such as casting on and the basic stitches you can do, as well as some more advanced ones too.

Worth every penny!
