5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtakingly Beautiful!!! 24 Sep 2010
By Lori Richardson - Published on Amazon.com
Daniel Asia, winner of the 2010 American Academy of Arts and Letters Award, has offered the world a beautiful collection of choral works! While listening to the flawless sound of the BBC singers, the listener will find themselves completely enveloped in his use of rich timbres, hauntingly beautiful harmonies and meaningful text. This collection breaks away from traditional choral music and invites the listener into a new, yet still accessible, realm of sound.

Every piece in this collection has a different emotion and image to offer. "Why Jacob", a personal favorite, is a breathtakingly beautiful piece inspired by a late friend of Asia's. This piece is not set to a text, however Asia brilliantly plays on the words Jacob, Yaweh and Yaacov. Throughout the piece, the listener can visualize the choir's pure tones wrapping and weaving around the tender melody in the piano.

Purer Than Purest Pure is a must have collection to any listener who seeks absolute beauty in sound!
5.0 out of 5 stars Bittersweet and Fascinating - A Revolutionary Marvel 24 Sep 2010
By Jonathan Simblem - Published on Amazon.com

Famed composer Daniel Asia once again refines the concert setting with this compilation of choral masterpieces; ever since hearing his Piano Concerto, I was amazed with Asia's unique sound - when I first listened to this CD featuring the BBC singers, my emotions were rather heightened with each passing phrase; I quivered with a sense of ecstasy and suspense. The color in each piece is ethereal and enchanting. I have no doubt that other listeners will feel privileged to observe this new collection.

With my own adoration for the works of Aaron Copland, Alexander Scriabin, and Olivier Messiaen, I easily credit the featured works such as "The SHE Set" and "Sound Shapes" as a catalyst for the postmodernist musical evolution.
5.0 out of 5 stars Masterful Artistry 23 Sep 2010
By Alex L. - Published on Amazon.com
These choral works display Asia's masterful artistry in his organic phrasing and the dynamic flow of each piece. The harmonic landscapes created incorporate seamless transitions from very consonant sonorities to more chromatic clusters that keep the music freely moving. The result is some just beautiful music, and what an incredible performance by the BBC Singers. Why (?) Jacob is hauntingly beautiful. Sounds Shapes are just gorgeous. Enough said.
5.0 out of 5 stars Clear, clean, and moving 23 Sep 2010

Wow. A clear and accessible compilation of new choral works by Guggenheim Fellowship winner Dan Asia. The texts are so aptly set that one hardly needs the words to understand the emotions being evoked. Asia's complex arsenal of sonorities draw in the ear and soothe the soul with familiar yet unique textures. Asia's voice is clear in every line, easily connecting composer to listener and performer alike with his clarity of pathos. The BBC Choir aptly uses all of their strengths and synergy to bring Asia's catalog to new ears and new life every time you hit the play button. Purer Than Purest Pure is a must-have for all grades of music lovers.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great music! 14 Sep 2010
By KJ - Published on Amazon.com
Daniel Asia is the winner of the 2010 American Academy of Arts and Letters Award, and this album is a collection of his choral works. Asia presents his musical ideas in such a clear way that no listener is left behind or lost. My favorite piece is "Why (?) Jacob" in which the piano goes beyond a mere accompanimental role to be a major protagonist in an ongoing dialogue with the chorus. Both piano and chorus share in the melancholic and nostalgic emotional landscape of the work. The duration of the CD is about one hour, but there is not a boring moment to be found. For any lover of choral music this is a must buy
