As a teenager, Ian Broudie played guitar in Liverpool combo Big In Japan, alongside future members of Frankie Goes To Hollywood, The KLF and Siouxsie And The Banshees. By most accounts, Broudie was regarded as the band nerd--the one who worked out the chords while the others got wasted. Hindsight though, paints a picture of a man biding his time. After seven years spent producing assorted guitar bands, 1988 saw Broudie taking his turn in the spotlight. Early hits like "Pure" and "Life Of Riley" created the blueprint for the Lightning Seeds' later, better-known successes; romantic lyrics, huge choruses and a childlike sense of wonder. For the latter, blame Pink Floyd. Broudie has frequently claimed that his pop career has been one long fruitless quest to emulate "See Emily Play". However, as this compilation of songs from the first three albums shows, most songwriters would be delighted with failures like these. --Peter Paphides

The best so far 14 May 2005

The Lightning Seeds return with 1996's 'Pure'. Following on from the success of 'Jollification'.
This however,is definatley the best collection of 'seeds songs to date.
From the opener 'The Life Of Riley' which is probably the bands best known song alongside 'Lucky You' through other highlights 'Sense' , Sweet Dreams' , 'All I Want' , 'Joy' , 'The Price' and of course the album title song 'Pure' this really is indie-pop at it's absolute best!
18 songs in total make up the album,and for less than £2 from most Amazon sellers,it really shouldn't be missed.
If you enjoyed Jollification,and love catchy pop tunes you'll love it...trust me.

I defy anyone coming from my post-punk, not quite post-punk, background to hate this album. Who could dislike this piece of 90s tat? I couldn't! I have tried but these pop songs are rather infectious! Money back guarantee at plawrence@hot.ee .

An album that will please everyone from the 1 year old to the 100 is a very difficult thing indeed. Here is a collection of brilliant songs, well produced, recorded and executed. The only downside is the poor slevenotes (no listing of which album each song is from).

Even if you have every album, get this one too. It's a great party pleaser.
