Review

Last night my book club met to discuss our latest read Pure Gold. I'm writing this review because it's rare for us to give a book such a unanimous thumbs-up. One of the group summed it up quite nicely as 'a good old-fashioned page turner'. It's a classic tale of an 'East End boy done good'. From a childhood of tuberculosis, abject poverty and anti-semitic abuse Gold has gone on to become a self-made multi-millionaire. Granted the rags to riches formula is hardly unique but what's so appealing about this book is that it's written from the heart. Whether describing the pain of estrangement from his father Godfrey or his joy on taking his beloved Birmingham City FC into the top division, Gold writes with honesty, fervour and eloquence. Ultimately it's a feel-good read that manages to avoid being corny. Thoroughly recommended! --Bookish

I thought this was an excellent read and you certainly don't have to be a football fan to enjoy it. The first half of the book is a open and honest account about how David rose from poverty to become a successful businessman. The second half deals with his eventful time as Birmingham City chairman and tells of his dealing with the likes of Barry Fry, Trevor Francis and Steve Bruce. Pure Gold has something for anyone who has ever dreamed of being an entrepreneur and rising above the ordinary. --Graham Hill

Pure Gold; paints a lively picture from beginnings of unbelievable poverty during the London Blitz to his spectacularly successful career in busness. I found this book truly inspirational and a thoroughly good read. The best book I've read for some time. --G.Wallace

Product Description

David Gold is a remarkable person with an even more improbable story. This is the original rags to riches tale of a man journeying from abject poverty and ill health in the back streets of the East End to a multi-million pound business empire and a magnificent mansion in the heart of the Surrey countryside. Along the way this fascinating story introduces us to crushing poverty, dysentery, East End villainy, anti-semitism and a father in prison...then a crucial 'break' in the world of business, followed by ownership of national newspapers and the hugely successful Ann Summers retail business, plus chairmanship of Premiership team Birmingham City FC. "Pure Gold" is a tale that will inspire people from all walks of life, by a man who has kept his feet on the ground at all times on his unbelievable life journey.
