3 months after the events in NIGHT LIFE, Luna Wilder is finally returning to active duty at the Nocturne City PD. Luna's endured psychological evaluations, the press revealing her identity and the disappearance of Dmitry Sandovsky, Alpha of the Redbacks, who's returned to the Ukraine to try and find a cure to the wound given to him by the demon, Asmodeus and not kept in touch.
Luna finds that the PD has changed since her sabbatical. Her new boss - Captain Morgan - wants to drive her from the police and forces her to team with a new partner, Shelby O'Halloran, a vice cop who's transferred to homicide and who is a member of the most powerful family of caster witches in the city.
When Luna responds to a call to an apparent death by drug overdose she's pitched into a sinister plot involving illicit drugs and a plan to tip the caster witches and their natural rivals, the blood witches, into a war - a war that has its roots in Nocturne City's history. The last thing she needs is for Dmitri to return to Nocturne City, bringing a new Russian mate and a requirement from his pack elders that he stay away from Luna.
Whether you like this book turns on whether you like Luna as a character and I didn't. She's supposed to be a tough, impetuous, take-no-prisoners woman, her natural impulses heightened by the uncontrollable nature of her werewolf persona. The problem is that all of this prevents her from acting like a believable, professional investigator. Any woman who opposes her is a bitch. Any man who opposes her is punched (except Dmitri, the only man permitted to physically and emotionally hurt her). She makes dumb decisions for stupid reasons, e.g. going into an office without backup, which makes it difficult to cheer her on.
Similarly, the relationship between Dmitri and Luna left me cold. Even allowing for his infection, he's a brutal, rude and arrogant character who never explains his actions. Kittredge leaves the outcome in no doubt - Dmitri's forced mate is a bitch and Luna's emo boyfriend, a wimp.
The mystery itself unveils in a predictable way and the twists are somewhat ho hum. The only saving grace comes from the world-building, with Kittredge building up the City's history to interesting effect.
All in all, it's a disappointing read and not one that would make me want to read on.

Three months after the events of Night Life, Luna Wilder is back on the beat as a homocide detective. The apparently random death of a junkie becomes something much bigger as Luna uncovers a link between the powerful caster and blood witch families of Nocturne City, and the threat of all-out war becomes a dangerous reality, with Luna in the firing line from all sides.
I know, I've done a pretty crappy job of summarising the plot, which is excellent. But really, you should just buy the book and discover all the many facets for yourself. Suffice to say, Pure Blood is a worthy follow-up to Night Life, just as gritty, dark, and weirdly Lovecraftian. But really, I'm all about the werewolves, so let's talk about them. In Night Life Luna was somewhat in denial concerning her lupine self, keeping herself isolated and lonely and telling herself she liked being that way. In Pure Blood, given her semi-celebrity status as an outed werewolf cop, she can't live like this anymore, and it feels like she doesn't really want to.
In attempting to change her life, Luna's hooked up with an emo (and human) boyfriend called Trevor. Of course she's not really interested in him, despite her best efforts. It's Redback werewolf Dmitri she really wants, but he's off-limits due to a rather nasty demon infection he picked up last time he and Luna hung out. The great thing about Pure Blood is that Kittredge gives us a lot more werewolf law and pack information. We see the threats that pack wolves pose to Insoli Luna. She's basically there for the taking by pack law, with no rights or means to defend herself beyond her own strength. Kittredge uses this to infuse the main plot with moments of real danger for Luna. This is an author who's not afraid to beat her heroine to a pulp. I appreciate that.
Ultimately, all this feeds into Luna's relationship with Dmitri and affects the decisions they make which will carry on to the third book, Second Skin. I'm always excited when authors allow their characters to actually develop in a realistic way, and Kittredge is doing just that. It gives you a reason to be invested in the series beyond the immediate plot. (Which, by the way, was subversive and creepy, but again, just buy it and see for yourself).
We also learn more about pack magic, something that was touched on too briefly before, as well as the caster and blood witch histories. It's fun to guess at where Kittredge intends to take the series overall, as she does seem to drop hints that Nocturne City's humans won't take the presence of werewolves and witches quietly for much longer.
So in conclusion, the second Nocturne City book builds on the foundations laid down by the first and paves the way for what looks to be a dark and scary third book. I have to reiterate again that I look forward to this, and anything else Kittredge writes, which luckily seems to be a lot.

Following the same story...

I am not so sure about this series... the story is evolving and in some ways it's good... In others I would like the heroine... more... gutsy... when you meet the guy that left you to go back home you don't fall on all fours to get him to stay... you ask questions and when you see that it's not going anywhere you just go... let him try to come to you... Luna lost points with me in that one....
Over all... if you liked the 1st book try it...

I have no doubt that Caitlin Kittridge is a talented writer and expect great things from her future books. For me, though, there are a few issues that prevent me from giving Pure Blood a higher rating.
First, after the first book (Night Life,) I didn't realize that Luna was so emotionally involved with Dmitri. She'd only known him a few days and they hadn't spent that much time together. So I was surprised by how strong her feelings were for him at the beginning of the second book. The relationship just didn't seem to have been developed to that degree, yet. Still, okay, I can get past this, but, given that Luna was supposedly so attached to Dmitri and that she has suffered from not having a pack, it seems just a bit odd that she didn't allow Dmitri to bite her and make her a member of his.
Second, I never quite understood how Luna was "forcing" her cousin, Sunny, to stay with her. It seemed throughout the first book, until the very end at least, that their decision to be roommates had been mutual. But, now at the beginning of the second book her cousin has been "freed" from her obligation and has happily moved back in with their Grandmother. Huh?
Third, I found it distracting when, at the beginning of Pure Blood, Luna, an experienced homicide detective, doesn't know that petechial hemorrhage is an indication of strangulation or asphyxia. Anyone who's ever watched CSI, read a mystery, etc. knows this and I certainly would have expected a homicide detective to have this knowledge. Minor, I guess, but it still interrupted the fantasy.
Finally, and this is certainly nothing to do with the author and I did not factor it into my rating, the Kindle version is almost impossible to read in many places. Even when all the words do appear the font is difficult to look at for any length of time.

Except for very annoying errors. Luna gets assigned a partner who can be just as bitchy and unpleasant as she is. Very promising. Shelby used to work vice and gets recognized by a guy she busted at an underage club. There are various incidents like that but they add up t a very good plot. Interesting gang war going on. But the plots both major and minor are marred by serious editorial and factual errors. Firefighters wear big bottles of compressed air on their backs (SCBA) not Oxygen. The Tibula and fibula are in the leg not the arm and in some 20+ years as an active EMT and nearly 30 on the ski patrol I have only seen one case of the fibula being broken without the tibia (that's the shin bone that runs from the ankle to the knee the fibula is a little bone behind it) also being broken. The radius and ulna are in the arm and it isn't real uncommon for one to be broken without the other. These annoying and persistent errors keep this from 4 stars. BTW Asmodeus is a demon of lust in the Hebrew mythology and one of the fallen (32 in rank) in the christian. Maybe why Luna is consistently after Dmitri.
