2.0 out of 5 stars NOT VERY ROMANTIC 8 Oct 2012
By summer
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I wasn't over keen on this book, it started off great, with the usual mills and boon love/hate theme, which is normally fantastic.

However this book took on a dark side, and the hero, not very nice. In real life, you would not have anything to do with this kind of man, however Eve the main charactor, loves him for all his faults which I feel, even after she has a near nervous break down, it borders on abuse more than romance

I normally espcape the everyday hum drum life with a mills and boon mordern romances, but this book just didn't do anything for me. I finished it, but whereas I would normally look at these modern romance books over and over, I wouldn't look at this book again. Far from your best Ms James.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Disappointment 3 May 2009
By Caroline Luu - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I usually enjoy Julia James' books, but this one was a big disappointment. The book is not something that I would ever recommend, even to fervent James' fans. The heroine gets bedded by a guy who proceeds to force her to have extremely kinky sex with him to save her family. That premise is not very unusual for romance novels, but she proceeds to have moderate post-traumatic stress disorder, which is not something that I look for in romance novels.

2.0 out of 5 stars Way too Dark for a Harlequin 25 Mar 2010
By Vanessa - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The other reviewers are right on target here. This story was way to dark. In the beginning of the book it was hard to get into it because of all the descriptions of things. Way, way too much of that. Then it picked up. But then it got dark. Luckily she, the author, didn't go into to much detail of the dark scenes. Suffice it to say I don't think ANYONE could believe the ending after that. Oh Eve wasn't TSTL in some scenes after that dark one. She actually stood up and that was great. Finally someone admits that just because the body gives a response doesn't mean that the person wants it.

The ending was totally WHAT??? I never seen that coming. Eve never even gave a bit away after the darkness that she loved Alexis. No way could these two possibly love each other. There is some serious problems there.

I gave the book two stars because she stood up for herself. I didn't even mind her returning to hear him out but to then claim to love this man???? I don't even think so. Perhaps Ms. James should try a longer version in a whole other genre. Alexis needed to redeem himself and I just don't think he could at that point and Eve need some help and getting it from someone else who suffered like her wasn't going to cut it. Just way too deep and dark for a Harlequin.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hero Got It Right Between the Eyes and Deservedly So 4 May 2012
By ebookfan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Alexei is a cold hearted man that seriously misjudges and uses Eve. He comes to realize the enormity of his error and did some pretty good groveling but she still would not forgive him. I liked the heroine because boy did she let him have it when he tried to apologize. What she said to him hit him right between his eyes. FINALLY a heroine that did not easily forgive the hero. Eve eventually forgave him in order to help heal herself for what he did to her. It is refreshing to find a heroine that did not roll over and forgive the hero after an apology, no matter how sincere.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not worth your time 24 April 2008
By AJK - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This book seriously disappointed me. The only reason I finished it is because I kept hoping it would get better. There is very little as far as a story line and way too many mile long descriptions that led nowhere. Not only that, the last pages were some of the corniest ever written, almost to the point of laughing and eyerolling. I never write these reviews, but I had to write this one simply to save anyone else the time and money they would spend on this. You're better off looking elsewhere.

1.0 out of 5 stars This book made me physically ill 10 Jun 2014
By Mo Harker - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I'm just sick. SICK. And I'm so angry that it's really hard not to cast aspirations on the author. After reading this and Bedded by Blackmail this morning, both by the same author, I can say I will never read anything by this author again. Ever.

In this book the male main character since he's not a hero. He's a pretty much a rapist. And considering the poor lead female character has major post traumatic stress after being subjected to a night of humilation by the main male character, rape is not far off, at all. He tries to explain this away by saying he heard she was that kind of woman anyway so...
WTF?

Yes Eve does read him the riot act. But she still goes back to him and spends her life with him? WHY?

And the "twist" that Alexi's sister was both forced into prositution by rich men, and than he saves women from it, including one who goes and guilts Eve by "he's totes a nice guy. really. i mean he saved us so that totally cancels out what he did to you."

Both books I read by this author involve men buying women, using them, making them feel unclean and dirty, Eve responding to this in an extreme though understandable manner. So I'm done with this author. She will never get another moment of my time or money.

The plot has been covered by others, so forgive me if I don't include it. Though the basic is rich jackass buys woman who is desperate and trying to save her brother whose a little kid and in a wheelchair and she and her mom run a rehab clinic for kids in wheelchairs. But it totally, according to some weird damn logic in this book, would have been fine if she was one of them evil rich wimmens who entraps men with their sinister lady bits to get money or luxury goods.

I can't recommend this book to anyone, but I seriously want to warn off survivors of sex trafficking and rape, as while the phrase arguably gets overused, this book is triggering as hell. There are lovely, loving, funny, sweet and sexy romance novels out there.

This is not one of them.
