4.0 out of 5 stars An odd collection of films, 16 Feb 2008
By
I. R. Kerr (Lancashire) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Puppet Master [DVD] (DVD)
This is a very odd collection of 4 films to be boxed under the Puppet Master banner, there's a clue on the box itself which does carry the sub-title "terror toys box set".
Considering there are 9 films in the Puppet Master series this is a collection that could have been easily improved with just a little thought and for that it loses a star.
I really love the first film though. Right from the start with the fairground style opening music it is a clever idea very well directed, it is also a funny movie. Here we meet Pin Head, Jester, Blade, Leech Woman and Tunneler and we get a glimpse of their master Andre Toulon's past. There has been at least one scene in the elevator which has been cut slightly.
The second movie introduces another puppet Torch as well as bringing their master Toulon back to life.
The third choice is a real oddity as Legacy is the 8th movie in the series and is largely a re-hash of scenes from the previous 7 movies, some of which are from the first two movies which are included here anyway.
The last one Demonic Toys is excused only for the fact that Tracy Scoggins is in it. It's not a bad movie it just does not really belong here, oddly the 9th Puppet Master movie is Puppet Master vs. Demonic Toys which IS in the separate Demonic Dolls box set.
The first two films come with a brief making of documentary.
A 9 film Puppet Master collection would be great but I'm content to own 3 of the series here and to buy the others individually.
A big thanks to Charles Band for the way in which he handles horror and humour so well, there are just so many great low budget gems produced by the Full Moon studio, and so many of them are on my wanted list.

4.0 out of 5 stars Crummy Selection of a Great Series., 16 Feb 2007
By
This review is from: Puppet Master [DVD] (DVD)
Ok, let me start by saying, that I love older Full-Moon films and I almost passed out when these films were announced to dvd.

Puppet Master (1989) Paul Le Mat
The start of the groundbreaking Full Moon career. In this film we find out that a man by the name of Andre Toulon has mastered the secret of life...In demonic devil puppets! The series starts out with 5 puppets, each with different attacks. Pinhead has vice like hands and incredible strenght. Leech Woman spits out killer leeches, while Tunneler drills things...sometime people. Blade and Jester are the leaders of the group. To the dvd...The picture quality is that of a slightly used VHS, it is soft and the blacks are muddy. It actually contains a descent amount of extra's for a series that is looked down upon.

Puppet Master 2 (1991)Charlie Spradling
The puppets are back! This time with a friend. All five of our favorites are back with a new leader. Torch is the newest puppet, he has the ability to throw fire!

Ok, this time around, a group of paranormal investigators decide to probe the Bodega Bay Inn, boy are they in for a treat. The quality is about the same as the first release.

Puppet Master - The Legacy (2003) Guy Rolfe
This is where the set draws down, I would'v loved to see Puppet Master 3 take it's place. In this addition imagine all of the puppet master films and produce a clip show that is a little over an hour. That is what we have! Quality is varing since it is mostly stock footage.

Demonic Toys (1991) Tracy Scoggins
I envy everyone who worked on this film, I love it soooo much! Okay, after a police officer tells her fiance that she is pregnant, a sting goes arwy. Leaving one crook wounded badly, and her husband dead, Judith must enter a haunted toy factory to recover the other villan. Once inside she encounters a fat lazy guard, A foul mouth chicken delivery guy and a homeless woman. Quality is the lowest here and there are no features, unless you count trailers.

B- due to quality and bad Movie Selection.

2.0 out of 5 stars Selection could have been better..., 16 Aug 2011
This review is from: Puppet Master [DVD] (DVD)
Okay, so in the this Puppet Master DVD Boxset, you get Puppet Master 1, Puppet Master 2, Puppet Master:Legacy and Demonic Toys (please note that this is NOT Puppet Master vs Demonic Toys). Although i loved the first and second Puppet Master, i thought that Legacy was just poorly made, as it was just clips from all the other Puppet Masters put into one.

If you're not a fan of "Demonic Toys" and thought Puppet Master : Legacy was utter rubbish, then this item isn't for you. You are better off purchasing Puppet Master 1 and 2 separatly and save some money :]

However, if you did like Puppet Master : Legacy and wouldn't mind having Demonic Toys, then i recommend this box set :]

I do believe that the people who made this boxset could have done a way better job. For example, they could have included Puppet Master III: Toulons Revenge and Puppet Master 4 + 5, as they were classic :-]
