This has taken till now to get a proper release, ever since home cinema started in 1979,all copies of this movie have been rubbish pan and scan or worse low grade vhs tape versions. Now at last a mint widescreen outing,it`s been called Bullit on water in the past and rightly so,the speed boat chase is still unsurpased, and the detail is now very clear throughout the whole film, you even see how much dirt and rubbish that is floating on the amsterdam channels.Ok now the cons, this is not a top grade thriller,b movie actors, and the dubbing in parts is a let down, but forget that and just enjoy this great ntsc region free disc, will play on any dvd unit worldwide.

Have waited too many years for this to be released on DVD - why so long, I have no idea! I've always rated Puppet On A Chain extremely highly, seeing it in the cinema back in the 1970's around the same time as I saw When Eight Bells Toll (which has been available on DVD for considerably longer).

I enjoyed the Alastair Maclean novel immensely and found the film to be a very good approximation of the book. Sven-Bertil Taube has great screen presence as Interpol agent Paul Sherman and Barbara Parkins has an old-school beauty and sensuality which seems to be missing amongst today's screen actresses. She is quite mesmerizing in the role of Maggie.

It's great to see Amsterdam and other parts of Holland as they were back in the '70's and the film quality appears to have been 'cleaned up' enough for the viewer to appreciate this element.

Although shot on a fairly limited budget, the film is tightly directed and the action sequences (including, obviously, the dynamic speedboat chase) are very well put together. Again, full marks to actor Taube (who wasn't particularly a mainstream actor, he was also a singer/songwriter as well) for handling a lot of the action himself - and doing it very well too. He looks good in the role.

There's a simple menu to eliminate all the Nordic/Scandinavian subtitles and the dialogue is the original English (i.e. not dubbed) so do not be put off by the fact that this is a foreign import. The only potential downside is that I found a very slight lip-synch problem with the spoken words but it's only very slight and it's possibly to do with my own DVD player as I feel I've been able to eliminate it virtually completely by skipping back a few seconds (using my remote) once I've started the film - so don't let that put you off.

Otherwise, an excellent purchase and a great addition to my collection of other Maclean-inspired films.

Gave this 5 for the film 4 for the picture tried to do some home work on this to try and get the best quality picture and screen ratio,so goes that this is a 1.85.1 ratio supposedly cropped also censored for the american market. No tits but violence is ok, to get the PG rating. The topless bar scene is included as a deleted scene.Did see this some years ago on the beeb late 1 friday night it was complete at a 4.3 ratio.Sven bertil taube plays the good guy narcotics the late great Vladek sheybal as the main bady. And not forgetting the speed boat chase only live and let die and amsterdammed have i seen better but these came after POAC.And ps written by Alistair Maclean if you like a good tough thriller but do not have to work to hard at it you should enjoy this.

The Alistair Maclean brand was already starting to lose it’s lustre when Puppet on a Chain hit the big screen in 1971, particularly on the big screen where the budgets were lower, the premises less high concept and the casts less starry – in this case Sven-Bertil Taube, Barbara Parkins, Vladek Sheybal (who gets to dress up both as a priest and in a white cowboy hat with matching jacket and polo neck), Patrick Allen and Alexander Knox. It’s a routine cops vs. drug pushers yarn that goes through all the usual tropes – the henchman who follows our hero but dies in a fight before giving him any information, the inevitable traitor within, the witness who gets murdered for helping him, the villain who leaves him tied up and facing an elaborate death (in this case involving headphones and several striking clocks) rather than just quickly disposing of him – with only the Dutch setting giving it much novelty. Thankfully it also offers the opportunity for a terrific speedboat chase through the canals of Amsterdam, which at least ensures that the film ends with a bit of a splash.

Considering how shockingly inept later his efforts like his amateur hour TV version of Maclean’s The Way to Dusty Death and the truly infantile Shadow Run are, director Geoffrey Reeve does a competent job here, though surrounding himself with a decent crew may have played some part in that, not least of them the very capable Don Sharp, who is prominently credited onscreen with directing the speedboat chase and ‘additional sequences’ as well as writing ‘additional material’ in what may have been a salvage job.

Alister Maclean films are often on the TV, but seldom does this title come on the box. However shortly after I purchased this it was screened on Film 4 I think. Anyway I now have my own DVD original. Good quality & one of the best early power boat chases seen on film.
