5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent summary of the punk movement 13 Nov 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
The most immediatley stiking aspect of this album is how misleading the title is; many tracks are not so much punk but either direct influences on punk (such as the Velvet Underground or the MC5) or the post punk style which followed 1977 (Pil or Joy Division for instance). This lends the album a far wider scope than, say, a "best of punk" collection comprising of solely the Pistols, the Clash, the Ramones etc (Although of course these excellent bands are included here). However, the historical and cultural significance of punk are not what is important here, what matters is that this album plays FANTASTICALLY. Pretty much every song is a killer (although the John Cooper Clarke poetry of "psycle sluts" is a bit bizarre) and the combination of artsy gloom (e.g the Velvet Underground), raw agression (the Sex Pistols), poppy melodies ("the sound of the suburbs" by the members), reggae ("Ku Klux Klan" by Steel Pulse) and even dance ("Contort Yourself" by James White) means that, even as a 2 hour double album, you will find yourself hard pressed to turn this off once it's in your CD player. I would reccomend this unequivocally to anyone with even the slightest liking for punk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Punkability 13 July 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
For those that missed it when most of the world banned it one way or another, it's back, just as viscous as ever, but with modern sensibilities, it's not really that bad. Great recordings as they all were once.

This brings together a classic group of songs on two discs. The music here would all have been played by des at punk gigs at the time. If you want a bigger collection go for no thanks a rougher collection Babylon is burning. Get it secondhand and it is likely to be an absolute bargain.
For completists this has a good liner booklet and includes the American influence on uk punk.
This does bring back strong memories for anyone who saw these bands in the seventies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good range of songs 7 Jan 2002
Format:Audio CD
It's nice to see a compilation that actually acknowledges the real roots of punk with bands like MC5, The Stooges and The Ramones included.
Also there are the classics from bands such as the Sex Pistols, the Damned and the Clash. I'm a little surprised to see that more obscure tracks are included for bands that have produced classics that epitomise punk, such as Day by Day from Generation X, when everyone knows tracks like King Rocker or Dancing with Myself.
Overall this is a great brief history of punk that includes all the major players from the genre's roots in the tail-end of the 60's up until the death of punk at the start of the 80's. I'm glad it doesn't include any of the post-punk bands that label themselves punk, but unfortunately it does include a couple of turkeys from John Cooper Clarke and Sid Vicious. This doesn't detract from the overall excellent quality of the tracks though.

1.0 out of 5 stars stab in the dark? 5 May 2012
Format:Audio CD
Maybe if the track list was available, one could decide whether one would like to buy it or not.. it might be good but then again it might be bad.. who knows. I might be a little picky but it does say various artists does it not????
