Product Description

Having run The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development in Kent, been a board member and worked with HR people for too many years to remember, I have had deep experience of the good, bad and ugly of a profession that is (a) essential since people matter and (b) essentially confused since some HR people have no idea how to deal with people. Having suffered lengthy meetings with no results, I decided it was time for something simpler, shorter and more authentic than the usual "War and Peace" HR textbooks.

In "Punk Rock People Management" I have stripped down HR to the bare essentials for busy people and those who are sick of HR jargon getting in the way of running a business.

In the spirit of punk, each ‘chapter’ is just one page long, which means that you can read a chapter in less time than it takes to pogo to a Sex Pistols or Linkin Park song! On hearing of the concept, Tom Peters, the world’s greatest business thinker, author and speaker sent me a mail with just two words in it: “Do it!” – Now that’s what I call a Punk Rock Business Guru ! :-)

"Punk Rock PM" is organised using the classic ‘Life, Sex and Death HR cycle’, in other words Hiring, Inspiring and Firing. To whet your appetite, some of the chapter titles are:

Selection – Shall I stay or shall I go?
Engagement – Pretty vacant
Innovation – What’s new pussycat?
Conflict – Who killed Bambi?

If you have to get things done with people and can't get no satisfaction from an HR textbook, try "Punk Rock PM" for a refreshing difference.

If you like Punk Rock PM, fast forward it to colleagues, customers, clients and contacts to start the positive revolution for plain people management!

5.0 out of 5 stars HR without the HR waffle 22 Sep 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
HR books are normally a natural alternative to sleeping pills. This one's a fun read. Surely somethings wrong? No. Peter has a cutting way of drawing out what we all feel deep down about the modern work environment and pushing aside what has been drummed into us by the HR machine over many years.

The book manages to draw together a wide range of thoughts, creating a fresh start for people management and trying to get us off the procedure manual and back to using our own intuition and experience.

We may not agree with every point, but that's what's good about the book. It makes us take a fresh, alternative look. I'm not a HR professional, I just run a small business. One thing this book teaches me is to be careful if I'm ever in the position of thinking I need to hire HR people. If that happens I'll be dipping into this book again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reading 21 Sep 2011

When the great Tom Peters says "Do it!", I imagine Peter Cook just thought - "Might as well then" in true Punk Rock style. Which is where this book comes in. I think it is even more spare than the two minute, two chord shouty punk single (with no "B" side) that we all loved for a moment or two. You will love this book longer. You may become defensive as a trad HR (Personnel?) practitioner, you may even be offended. But it will make you think and maybe give you an idea or 7 to put into action. I certainly have. Dying to hear what true HR people think!

5.0 out of 5 stars never mind the bo*****s, read this! 23 Sep 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Peter never fails to amaze and this short and very frank overview covering many of the management concepts that drive business and encourage change is a definite No.1
Punk started a revolution in music and spawned a whole new direction for many who were captured by the experience. Its influence can still be felt today and the link that Peter makes with HR processes and his 'punk chord' tips after each track might just be enough to get us thinking about what we do, when and why we do it and like many of the great bands of that punk era, how to do it differently with 'attitude'.
Its a cleverly written piece of work and having spent msny years working on a variety of the subjects he covers, his assessment of the topics appears intuitive and profound yet surprisingly the solutions seem simple and relatively easy to implement. After reading the book that is! But wasn't that the whole philosophy behind punk, keep it simple, communicate with an engaged audience and keep them pogoing until they drop. Bring on the punk revolution in HR, we need it now!
