Review

"Dorling Kindersley is to publish a beautifully illustrated, well-researched tome called Punk: The Whole Story, and it's worth every penny." The Bookseller 09/06/06

Product Description

The definitive story of Punk, from Anarchy in the UK to American Idiot With three decades worth of interviews, insider info, unseen photographs and memorabilia, the full story of rock and roll’s most rebellious offspring is told – the gigs, the three-chord classics, the scandals, successes and fashions, in all their safety-pinned glory. Eyewitness accounts from the people who were there, original features from Sounds magazine (the first to cover Punk) and the best music writers from Mojo relate how an underground scene in New York and London transformed the pompous, stale music of the 1970s, and inspired New Wave, Grunge and a whole generation of bands. Get an insight into the good, bad and the ugly of Punk including its foremost icon, Sid Vicious. Relive the heyday of the great British bands: The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Damned, The Buzzcocks and more. Visit Punk Rock in America from the Ramones to Rancid, Blondie to Green Day and check out the great venues like CBGBs, climb on board the legendary Sex Pistols Thames Party Boat, and find the greatest punk singles and albums of all time. Combining the in-depth knowledge of Mojo’s finest writers with exclusive pictures taken by the world’s best music photographers, Punk is the complete record of a rock revolution.

4.0 out of 5 stars Punk. The whole Story?, 27 Nov 2006
By T. R. Salisbury "Russell Salisbury" (Edinburgh, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A great and mostly well informed book that brings back a lot of happy memories from my well spent youth! However, I'm surprised at a few glaring omissions such as MC5 don't get a mention - perhaps the first true punk band? And The Who's, My generation has to be the first record in the genre? The main oversight for me though is the neglect of Eric's club, Liverpool. Perhaps I'm partial because it was my second home at the time but it was the place to play in 76 -77. Every band mentioned in the book played there, apart from the newer post punk bands. The Pistols with The Clash and The Damned on one night in, I think, November 76, the Anarchy tour! I was talking to Paul Simonon (The Clash) in Eric's about a year later who confirmed it was the place to be seen. Blondie, Television and Talking Heads on the same night sometime in early 1977, The Ramones...I could go on... Like I said if they are in book they played Eric's, as did a plethora of bands not figured in the book. Some great band's arose from Eric's too, to name a few - Big in Japan, The Mighty Wah, The Drills (ahem...), Elvis Costello, Echo and the Bunny Men. It was also the breeding ground of many other not-so-punk bands - Frankie goes to Hollywood, Lightning Seeds, OMD...It is even possible (probable?) that "The Pogo" started there, well that's the first time I saw it! Anyway back to the book, a lovely book with lots of great pictures, many previously unseen and well worth the Amazon price. I paid $45 in NYC - should have waited till I got home! If you where there at the time this book will help to bring IT back, if you where not there then you will never really know!

4.0 out of 5 stars Punk by DK, 28 Oct 2009
Has no one noticed that this is not actually a book within its own right. It is the NME and Mojo specials and some other Punk in hindsight specials of the last few years all crammed together by DK and selling as an original book. As someone who has already bought the contents of this book elsewhere I can say if you also have its a waste of time, if you have not, well then its a damned good history of Punk with a few flaws.
