Punk Goes Pop depicts another link in the chain of 'Punk Goes...' compilations from Fearless Records. It has gone Metal, Acoustic and now Pop so how does it fare? Well as many people will know one of THE best things about punk as a genre is its ability to allow strong and entertaining cover versions; many of which have been of pop songs. Pop may be irritating and commercial in large doses but it is undoubtedly insanely catchy. So once you stick a proper band behind the melody, the results can prove very rewarding.
With that in mind I was expecting this release to be the strongest in this series: In some ways I was correct in my assumptions. However while it is the strongest concept, it is unfortunately far from strong as a whole. Songs like; Dynamite Boy's fabulously true to original yet ballsy cover of - 'I Want It That Way' represent the life preservers that keep this floundering record above the salty surface of the sea of mediocrity.
One of the biggest problems with this release is the lack of covers of really well known songs. All in all there are only about 5 really universally recognized classics here. The rest are b-list numbers from a varying range of pop celebrities. An example would be Stretch Armstrong's hardcore version of Pink's - 'Get This Party Started' vs. the little known 'Everywhere' originally performed by Michelle Branch. Element 10's take on Nelly Furtado's - 'I'm Like A Bird' is weak and sadly far too much like the original to offer anything new. This contrasts strongly with the fabulous Knockout track; 'Survivor' (by Destiny's Child) with strong hooks, fine representation of the original and meaty delivery.
The Starting Line perform adequately, never going further than you would expect whilst certainly not challenging their style either.

This is the same CD as the other Pop Goes Punk CD, as I found when I ordered it. Oops. So if you have the other one you have this as well.
As far as the music goes its a good little novelty, I DJ a punk night and find myself often using the songs on this CD to break the night up, Further Seems Forever's version of 'Bye Bye Bye', Rufio's 'Like A Prayer' and Student Rick's 'Heaven Is A Place On Earth' being particularly good.

The CD is really good, a little old now but I knew that when purchasing and have purchased volume 2 and 3 since! Delivery time was to long though!

Most of the songs on this album are quite offputting on first hearing them. They do grow on you, after a few weeks... Fantastic album

showing the true light-heartedness of the skate punk scene in america the new punk goes pop cd will finnaly bring punk and pop lovers the unity that they have yearned to achieve for so long. blending the loud and fast feel of punk with those pop songs that you were just too scared to admit u liked in fear of being seen as one of "the buitiful people".
this long awaited cd includes bands like rufio and slick shoes - two up and coming bands from california the home of skate punk. i hope you kids have some vassaline lying around...the overwhelming feeling to hum along is unfortunately unavoidable.
